RANT: Uncertain future for Pitty.

    RANT: Uncertain future for Pitty.

As you may or may not know here in the province of Ontario there is a Pit Bull ban. It has been in effect since 2005. My friend's neighbor brought home a PB puppy almost 3 years ago from a BYB. Well last Saturday she got a visit from the animal control officer. The officer showed some empathy and gave her 48hrs to "find a solution". The owner decided to fly the dog to her son's home in Nova Scotia. The officer agreed and has given the owner until Sunday to make the arrangements.

Now this poor dog has never been muzzled (which will be required) and has never been in a crate. Add to that the dog is still intact and has no vaccinations because the owner was afraid if she took him to the vet she would be reported. Socially the dog  by all accounts is a little high strung (probably because it's not exercised) but good with people. It has never been socialized with other dogs and barks and lunges. I have no idea what is in store in Nova Scotia. Her son is 23 and lives alone since he just broke up with his girlfriend.

I feel so sorry for this dog but I'm so angry with the owner. To me she has been totally irresponsible and now the dog is in this traumatic situation. The least she could do is drive the dog to Nova Scotia IMO. Instead she is sobbing to anyone that will listen about how she can't bare not having her dog, how she is the victim. Poor me!

While I am livid at the thought of responsible people not being able to own their breed of choice, this woman does fit into the category of irresponsible, and, sadly, you are right that the dog is the one that will suffer.  Hope she thinks to buy a Pit Bull proof crate for the ride...stupid human.

I agree with you Anne. I think the law is unfair and flawed but it is the law. There are lots of laws in this province that I disagree with and IMO infringe on my rights. I reluctantly abide by them and do what I can to change them.

Jeez, I hope they never pass that law here in Nova Scotia.  I see more pitt bulls in my area than any other breed it seems.

Probably transported from Ontario! Sounds like typical gov't 'passing the buck'.

I'm not even sure the dog can fly without vaccinations.

I'm with you .....totally this woman is being irresponsible. Unfortunately, it is because of people like this that these laws are passed. This poor dog is probably going to be totally crazy with fear, being locked in a crate, since it has never been in one. How much has he even been out in public, if she was so afraid of being found out? I just hope he doesn't hurt himself or break out of the crate and get lost. Wonder if her son will get him neutered. As always the animals suffer.

You are so right, and doesn't it just frost your cookies every time? Super Angry

To be honest, if they suddenly passed a law outlawing my chosen breed, I would move somewhere else if I already owned one or if I really wanted one badly enough, but I certainly wouldn't endanger a dog by getting one on the QT.  This is the same thing as hiding the pet from the landlord when you already know the policy is "no pets" - and it's just as stupid to think you won't be found out.  People in general are nosy and controlling, and they love to tattle.

    Zip it!

Poor dog. :-(  I hope things go ok for him in the end.

I understand people hiding dogs if they had them before the stupid ban if they can't move out of the area, but this person purposely got one from a BYB after the ban was in effect.  That's just ridiculously stupid.  Because of that, the dog is underexercised, undertrained, and never seen a vet.  Horrible.

On the other hand, SOMETHING has to be done about these stupid bans.  They piss me off beyond belief.  I won't even consider getting a pit bull.  Not because I don't think they're awesome dogs (in fact, I love them) but because I fear a ban suddenly taking my companion away.

When the ban came into effect in Ontario dogs already living in the province were grandfathered. The ban did require these dogs to be neutered, on leash and muzzled in public. I was actually quite shocked at the number of pre-ban pits who were surrendered at the time despite the owners ability to keep them.

is the flight arranged? Because MANY airlines will not fly PB type dogs, either. She might be in for a rude awakening on that as well.

When the ban was passed, I was a regular volunteer at a small no-kill shelter in Alberta - it was heartbreaking with the number of calls that we got from desperate shelters in Ontario, begging us to take a few dogs. We did end up getting a few, but the shelter only held 10 dogs at it's max. A few managed to get into foster homes.

Seems to me though, that if she got the puppy with full knowledge that it was illegal to have them, she was almost setting herself up for failure. Knowing that she wouldn't be able to socialize it properly, or take it to the vet -- I certainly wouldn't have done it, for the puppy's sake. And now the poor thing is paying the price.
