    New dog.....or not?

Hey guys I need your help, my boyfriend and I are seriously considering another dog, now we already have the king of the jungle Simba he will be 6 months on 2nd June.

I know I am asking a stupid question but I probably need you guys to put me straight as I wont myself, but I really want a little Pom would it be wise to get one with the big guy around?

We took him too meet a litter last night and he was ever so gentle, he got a little excited but we controled him and praised his good behaviour, I know they could never be left together unsupervised but would this be a wise choice???

I have always wanted a Pom, even before Simba came along so what do you think?

why do you want a new dog? is it because you want simba to have a playmate, because you have always wanted a pom or some other reason?

in my opinion, maybe you should wait a little longer. simba is still a puppy and getting another puppy would be quite a handful. maybe it would be better to get a new dog when simba's a little older.

It has always been my plan to have 2 dogs but I have just been so focused on Simba that I have not felt the need to expand my furry family.

I know he is still only young but........Oh I dont know I just want another dog!!!

I have always wanted a Pom and also a playmate for Simba would be great, just as Poms are so fragile would it be a good idea with the incredible hulk bouncing around?

The book "Katz on Dogs" by Jon Katz has an excellent section about getting a 2nd dog.

For me personally, my rule is "when in doubt, do nothing." I need to feel really sure about something before doing it, especially something life changing. I would wait and see if in 6 to 8 months you still feel this same way, or if the urge has increased...or passed. [:)]

OT perhaps but I certainly would NOT allow a strange dog around my litters of puppies...period! I have to wodner why this breeder, did. Shots notwithstanding your dog could have trudged thru an old patch of Parvo on the way to my home...what a huge risk to take! PLEASE in future try not to bring him along unless you are viewing older pups(4 months on) that are cleared by a vet to be around strange dogs...

Are you still planning on showing your boy (think this was you I am remembering when we discussed neutering on some other thread)? If so you might consider how big a drain of time, energy, and money that will be and factor that into the equation as well.

I know........ maybe it would be more clear cut to me if I wanted to get another Chow or another big breed as they are more robust and could cope with rough play with a 6 month old male Chow. My doubt has crept in since I  saw Simba next to a 10 wek old Pom last night and he looked like a giant.

Getting another dog would be no financial burden and I have the space/ time etc its really down to the breed I want being a Pom and the breed I already have.

I suppose I will have to wait until he is a little older, but I cant really see what difference waiting will make.................I feel pulled in different directions my Heart is yelling YES YES and my head is screaming NOOOOOO???????????

If your head is telling you no...IMO you should listen. This would be a lifelong commitment so I wouldn't proceed unless and until your head and heart are more on the same page.

Yeah I thought that myself but the breeder was ok with it, the Poms were in a crate and Simba was on a leash, he did however poke his nose through the bars for a sniff, and when the pups came forward to meets him he was nuzzling them.

Also Im not to sure about showing him anymore dont know that he will meet breed standard plus his humping is getting worse so thinking about getting him castrated which would rule out showing altogether.

This is what I need people telling me NO otherwise I will convince myself that it would be ok and do it!

Minimom, good advice. I think this is common for folks right around 6 months of age on the first dog. It's smilar to when your "baby" take it's first steps and becomes a toddler. For many of us that's when baby envy hits hard...but they always grow up...always...and you cannot always keep adding on lol!

I've found that with showing or probably some other activities...puppy envy is less taxing because at 6 months the show life or performance life can begin in earnest and you have something to focus on besides the puppy becoming a grown dog...

Maybe you can take a new class (agility, therapy, obedience, tracking etc) or learn a new activity with your boy, and see if the need abates or becomes stronger or stays the same..that way you two can learn something new in either case right?

Well, it probably would be "OK" but is that the ideal? Do you want "OK", or do you want it to be GREAT?

...just what you had imagined it to be, great...because you planned it out, waited until the timing was exactly right, had your boy's manners and training well in hand, etc.

I don't frequent the training threads so forgive me if this would be a repeat...but is he humping you? other people, stuffed animals or other dogs? Have you found some way to fix that...as it may not be sexual at all and neutering really mightn't help much.

You are so right Gina thats the way I feel he is not a puppy any more he is a big boy now and yeah I do have puppy envy I miss his cuddles on the couch and helplessness. Now he is so independant and grown up!!!!

I am really interested in showing him but dont know where to start plus how do I know if he meets breed standard???
    • Gold Top Dog
    but is he humping you?

He has never humped me or my BF he humps my mother and other dogs, he cannot interact with another dog male or female without mounting them!!!!

Best place to get started is your breeder, they know their lines and their dogs and can tell you what his faults and strengths are. If the faults outnumber or outweigh the merits then he is not a show dog :) but a wonderful pet. Barring that, you can read your standard, look at pictures of dogs currently out there winning...and compare with your own eyes. Does he look like them? Make sure you can be objective...and try not to make excuses for what you see that's different. Brutal honesty is what's of value when deciding show or pet...lol.

Here is the US the Chow is a "head breed'...a lot of weight is placed on head type and coat. I can see in the pic...in my own view..his head type is not that of the dogs shown here...but this is the US, and one thing I've learned is that standards can vary widely from here to there lol!

Now as to the humping he needs to be shown that's not appropriate. The most valuable tool for this is an old tetchy bitch that WILL put a dog in it's place if he even thinks about mounting her inappropriately...lol! I have seen huge dominant males reduced to the canine equivalent of tears by a bitch like this! Do the other dogs correct him at all when he does this? What's his reaction to the corrects he receives from other dogs?  does he escalate? seems shocked the wander off only to try again in a minute?

I am not sure he will meet breed standard as its the same over here is the UK also his muzzle is much longer than it should be it has grown considerably since he was a pup, I would so much love to show him though I suppose he could go into some amature comps.

With his humping he has never been corrected by another dog all though I have corrected him myself, someone mentioned it could be a dominance thing but he dosnt hump me.

Maybe the old tetchy bitch would be a good idea LOL [sm=rofl.gif]
