stop eating poop?

    stop eating poop?

So, i think i may have mentioned this in a previous post, just as a passing statement.. but its becoming more of a problem.

Coco, likes to eat poop.  Alot of it.  ALL the time.  Not just hers, either.  She'll eat Teddies, and if we're on a walk.. she'll grab any random poop particle she can find.. when we try to grab it out of her mouth, she locks her jaw up and makes it almost impossible to open... or she'll swallow it before we can get to it.   We now, have to BABYSIT her while they're outside.. and as soon as one of them go to the bathroom, try and get to it before she does.. which poses as a hassle, because we have to schedule getting ready for work around watching them outside.

Does anyone know what I can do to stop this??  Maybe its normal, but seriously..its gross.

people have said to try putting garlic powder, or meat tenderizer on the food.. is that healthy for her? does it work? .. they sell pills at petco to stop it, but I don't want to buy them if they don't work.

    HELP! lol

I know its gross...but its a dog thing.  Its like humping...we humans don't like it...and try everything to make them stop.

My initial thought.....what are you feeding?  I'm certainly no expert....but if it is a lower grade food...it may just pass through and out without getting the benefit of nutrients.  Therefore, the poop tastes pretty good to them (recycled).  In other words, if you are feeding a high quality food which distributes the nutrients in the body appropriately, the waste is just that....waste.  Less chance to be attracted to the smell and taste.

Having said that, however....my Bruder does eat poop sometimes; and I feed a premium grain free food, Taste of the Wild.  I don't get too worked up about it.  I do, however avoid kisses from him **shivers**  Tongue Tied

Sounds like she is not properly digesting her food.  Adding a probiotic/enzyme supplement such as Prozyme could do the trick . You can find Prozyme at Petco, Petsmart and other pet retailers.

Another product to consider is Fresh Digest---also available at most Petco's, etc......

Nothing works for sure -- I've used For-bid from the vet and it deters her for a LITTLE while but as soon as you stop using it they resume.

You have to do WHATEVER you do to all the resident dogs food -- pumpkin might help, papaya might help (papaya juice works best - and I just stirred it into the homecooked food I made).

DO NOT USE meat tenderizer.  it's 99% salt and when I tried it years ago (at a vet's suggestion) I wound up with ALL of my dogs having kidney problems for a while.  It's just plain almost PURE salt with some papaya enzyme (which is really what apparently can be effective).

You can use papaya pilsl but be VERY VERY sparing -- like make one capsule do for 4 days for one dog.  You have to do it EVERY meal -- literally what you're trying to do is make it taste rancid to them -- and quite honestly most dogs who "partake" don't care about taste.

Now - my theory is this -- the more digestible the food the better.  But some dogs are just going to do it.

But if you feed a very high protein food -- then honestly their bodies only use so much of it, so to be honest a premium food can bite you because it's loaded with goodies not used in the waste.  We have a very strong trend right now to feeding very high protein foods and most dogs just plain don't use it.

It tends to be the high protein that attracts them -- they smell it in the poop.

The dogs I've had that have been the worst offenders have been starved at some point in their life and they just plain can NOT pass up a meal. Kee Shu was horrible about it.  Tink is also.  I've seen her make herself SO SICK on it she'll puke -- and go right back to it.

I think there are as many reasons for it as there are dogs who do it -- I think for some they are just driven to consume any protein they find.  Some are merely opportunists.

It may help you to put the dog on a long leash even in the back yard -- and when you see them going for it -- it gives you that extra 20 feet of "control" to drag them away from it.  That sounds awful but sometimes it's the only thing you can do.

You can NOT use the stuff from the vet and the petstore long term.  But avoid meat tenderizer like the plague -- that one is really truly horrible for them -- if you read the label it's salt and papaya enzyme.  The papaya you CAN do.

My Kenya started eating poop.  I just keep her from doing it (clean up once a day or more) or resign myself to the fact that if I'm not paying attention, she'll do it.  It's never made her sick and I have no intention of changing her diet, it's just a gross thing she does (she's neurotic and has all sorts of strange, obsessive behaviors!).

The other thing I thought about is to teach a dependable "leave it."

I'm trying to correct this situation also for one of my dogs. From what I've read it doesn't seem to be harmful to them overall. But it is disgusting. So far the best solution has been for me is to just clean up after them as soon as possible so the tempation isn't there.

I did find one site that pretty much had the same info as all the othre sites. But the pictures they used were pretty funny. One website that I found that I thought was pretty funny on the topic. The sites name is Poop Eating

You make me understand. Great post of helping me. You helped me so much.

I used to have dogs that ate poop and when I switched them to a prey model raw diet, they stopped eating their own.  They would still eat the poop of kibble fed dogs.  I suspect its the carbs in the poop they were going after.  They would still eat horse poop too.  I think with the prey model raw diet, all the nutrients are absorbed by the body and the poop is pretty nutritionless.

It simply tastes good to your dog (disgusting I know!), or it could be a symptom of anxiety, stress or boredom. To stop her in eating poop you should feed her with balance and nutritious meals. Always keep your dog's living area clean of *** and provide a few stuffed chew toys to keep her occupied. You can also teach her the basic obedience command "leave it". You can also put a tablespoon of pineapple in her food. Apparently pineapple tastes terrible when eaten in poop - can't say I've never tried it myself!LOL Other people have used Pumpkin, Spinach, Pickles or Garlic for the same purpose.
