    dogs and eggs?

has anyone's dog ever swiped a whole egg off the counter?

our puppy got one on saturday. my wife was getting ready to make some brownies and was getting the ingredients together and left a couple of eggs laying on the counter and turned her back for about 3 secs and sydney grabbed the egg in his mouth took it over to his bed and gently laid it on the bed. i am not sure what he was planning to do at that point because my wife realized what was going on and got the egg back. amazingly he didnt even crack the shell. i guess my second question would be, if he had tried to eat it (shell and all) would the shell have hurt him?

It all would have been fine.  Egg shells are a great source of calcium, although I wouldn't supplement just with egg shells unless you're also feeding raw meat without bone.  Egg with the shell is fine.  Cousteau gets eggs on a regular basis.  When we had two dogs they both would eat the shells so no one would get food from the other's dish.  Now that it's just Cousteau, he cracks the egg, licks out the contents, and leaves the shell.  The brat found a turkey egg and had a grand old time with that!

i dont think we would have intentionally  given  him an egg still in the shell, just wanted to make sure it would have been ok in case it happens in the future. [:D]

Totally okay, in fact, good.  Although not the shell pieces, some people grind them so they wont be pointy pieces.  Some of us here add a raw egg to their food.  Just make sure its the whole egg, yolk and white.

Has he been watching any nature shows lately? Maybe he wanted to hatch himself a little fuzzy chick friend. [sm=biggrin.gif]

Eggshell is harmless. The only danger in raw eggs is if you get a bad batch that haven't been kept cool enough and that have salmonella inside them.

Be glad he swiped the eggs and not the CHOCOLATE which is poisonous to dogs.

Sara does love eggs. When I throw the chicken/duck eggs in the field I have to throw them way out, because she will find them.

    LOL Janice ... too funny.

Riley also gets a raw egg every now and then mixed with his food.

I think Sophia got into eggshells right after Easter.  The day after I noticed eggshell crumbs in the kitchen I noticed that she was having problems (pain from sharp pieces I guess) "going" and she was greenish blue around the, uhh yeah

Mirelle eats 'empty' eggshells when she can snatch them. I don't mind, since it is a good source of calicium. And I let them eat eggs if they break and fall on the floor or whatever, but don't feed them intentionally.  No reason though, I don't mind the dogs eating that.
