I am going to try and tempt my little Wrens back this year. It was so fun watching them raise their chicks last year....I hope they grace our home again!

Awesome pics!  The robins just arrived in our neck of the woods a few weeks ago.   I have never had Cedar Waxwings here but have a ton of Titmouse, Chicadees, Redwing blackbirds, several different varieties of Woodpecker, lots and lots of Finches several different varieties, swallows, hawks, owls, crows.  The yellow finches are starting to get their color back.  I saw a Blue Bird  yesterday!!!!  Whoohoo!!!  In our little community we have bird possesion fights, lol!  I have one neighbor that has most of the hummingbirds, One neighbor that covets the Blue Birds, I usually have most of the finches, last year for about 2 weeks I had an oriole pair,  I am a big bird watcher/feeder!

ooo I was thinking about putting up a wren house this year. I have a carolina wren that visits my feeders now and again. I love how he sticks his tail up ;p

I covet blue birds, but doubt that i will ever get them. I think I have too many finches and sparrows for them to come around.

The goldfinches haven't started to get their bright color here yet but it must be coming! I just can't wait to get the hummingbirds back :) Those are my fav. i could watch them all day.

love those pictures! one of my favourite websites is Whatbird.com

we're having similar invasions in FL at the moment.. little green/yellow finch type things - sorry, havent looked them up lol - twice now they two of them have gotten themselves trapped inside the bird feeder.....

Those sound like American Goldfinch or Lesser Goldfinch.

For those that like birding I will link some websites when I get home.

Oh yea I musnt forget....We have cardinals by the millions.

    • Gold Top Dog

I only have a few cardinals that come around. I think they are the same 3 every time. 2 females and 1 male. They are pretty skittish too, which is such a bummer because they're so pretty!

    • Gold Top Dog

Tried to post some of my cardinals but the pics are too big, darn...too much going on here to fix them now!

A friend of my mom's used to have a Cedar Waxwing as a pet.  It flew in her house 1 day and never left.  It lived to be 13 years old!  When it first came to them her husband was in the final stages of cancer and the bird seemed to be really attached to him.  When the bird finally died she buried him at the cemetary with her husband.

What a sweet story!  I have a Nuthatch that comes in everymorning, sings me a little song about 6:45 a.m. hangs around my plant room for a while then goes back out and eats and plays with his friends.  I have not seen where he is coming in, I used to get him to leave thru my plant room door but now he just comes and goes as he pleases.  We live in a very old farm house so there is probably tons of places that a little nuthatch can get thru Wink  I have really enjoyed having him fit into our routine.

We have lots of cardinals that hang out in our trees.  They're so pretty (the boys)...I love to watch them.  Sammy loves to chase them, lol.

Also, apparently there is a woodpecker that pecks away at our nextdoor neighbor's chimney. Surprise  He used to work on a big pine we had in the middle of the yard, but we had to have it removed cuz it was dying.  So apparently the neighbor's chimney was his 2nd choice.  One day I couldn't figure out where the noise was coming from, then I saw him on their house.  I wonder if they can hear it inside and are thinking "Where the HECK is that sound coming from??"

I had a hummingbird feeder up, but never attracted a single bird.  Sad  My grandmother gets them all the time on her feeders...they must know they're her favorite bird.  I've seen three drinking from a single feeder at her house before.  Its very cool!

I used to take walks with Gracie in some meadows near the house in WA to visit the elk.  One day, as I cut thru the woods between meadows, this scary buzzing came right by my head and I thought it must be a giant bug so I ducked.  It was a hummingbird.  Cuties.  We really are so lucky to live in a country that has such a wide variety of birds you only see in certain parts of the country.

i just noticed that last week.. my mom bought a couple of hanging petunias for my porch. while washing dishes i saw from the kitchen window a little bird was flying in and out of one lol

and here's the jail"bird" Embarrassed sorry..

lol its not a goldfinch though, those are PRETTY though! i think this is one of the females.. she was plain old brown. but while we were in Atlanta over the weekend my mom told me a green/gold one was trapped inside this feeder. she didnt know how to get him out, so i assume he let himself out. poor thing!

the trick to that feeder is. the lid lifts right off... but i rarely use it because its such a pain in the butt. when it rains the seeds the birds dont eat start growing...... i have a wide flat flower pot that i have turned into a feeder. works much better than this kind!

i also love those blue birds! i keep saying every year i'm going to buy or build houses for them. they are such a pleasure to see :)

I have one of those feeders but I never use it. You are right, it is such a pain in the butt. I hate wood feeders. I get the recycled plastic ones now. Much much easier to clean and pretty much indestructable.

Re: humingbirds, when you first put your feeder out, hang it out in the open so that if a bird is flying over it can look down and see the red feeder. Once the hummingbird finds the feeder then you can relocate it to a better spot for viewing. Also hummingbirds will pretty much investigate anything that is reddish in color. I have seen them looking through my bay window trying to investigate my painting from jamaica (has bright yellows, oranges, reds). So, plant or hang red flowers.

    • Gold Top Dog

I can second the red color. One day last year I was outside enjoying the sunshine and the next thing I know I have this little flitty bird trying to find a place to roost and get lunch....I was wearing a bright red shirt.

Also the necter does not need to be red, clear is fine as long as the feeder is red.

I went to look and my birding site is state only, but I am sure you can find some for your state alone. But, I wanted to show you some of the things that you would never hope to see. I got this email last week, look at these and try not to shake your head in awe.
