Getting a new dog??

Corgi! My girl is a total lapdog and not extremely active. She does shed, but daily brushing helps a lot. How small is small? Toots weighs 25 lbs, not huge, but definitely not tiny. Beware these dogs are herders and extremely smart. I shouldn't have said beware, more like do your research. Also, if left to their own devices, they will find something to occupy them and you probably won't like it.

Yeah.  When I get called about fosters they KNOW better than to ask me about the little dogs.  I honestly am afraid I'd break one of the little ones.  Despite years of cocker spaniels, geeze, I'm so used to my giant lugs that I shudder  to think what a good pat on the butt would do to a tiny dog!

While I understand what Jackie is saying, I have to agree with Chuffy regarding the poo fade dogs.  Poodles have a lot of great characteristics, so why mix them with a zillion other breeds?

You might want to check just a little bit further from home with rescues.  Gosh, folks on this forum have many times been involved in transport for puppers needing a lift to their new, forever homes, so there are LOTS of possibilities.  Good luck.  If you want to post your general location, I'm sure many of us would be willing to check our area rescues for a dog that fits your requirements.

Sorry, Tiffy. Corgis are FAAAAAR from being a toy sized, non shedding breed, LOL. I love 'em, but after living with a Corgi mutt for 16 years, I have to say, they shed. There were always furballs in the corner, regardless of brushing, stripping, force drying, and later shaving the dog, LOL.

I have been looking at shelters around my area and we need a small dog and they don't really have them around here.

Dont worry, you can find tons and tons of them here:

Try petango.com too - another great tool

Don't be put off if you see a dog far away from where you are. many smaller groups have foster homes throughout the state/country. I foster for a group based in the midwest (I'm in FL) and our "FL headquarters" are on the other side of the state. :)

Basically - if you see something you're interested in, ASK! If it's the right home - a rescue WILL make it work, you just have to speak up

Thanks Glenda.  I deleted my post because I knew that there would be someone who took my statement to mean I support the current trend of creating breeds to sell to the uneducated dog buying public.  The fact is that there is nothing wrong with mixing purebred dogs. The breeders who developed our current purebreds were trying to create a dog to suit their needs whether that was hunting, herding, guarding or as a small companion dog. And they also bred for certain looks and coat color.  The huge difference in today's designer breeder is a lack of concern with quality.  In the old days, puppies that didn't fit the breeder's plan were culled from the program.  Breeders kept dogs to adulthood to determine their temperment and abilities.  That's a far cry from the mass breeding of cute dogs with no care for their genetic health.

Chuffy was using my statement to make her point and that's fine as long as it's clear what my point was.

Jackie, must be one of those "over 30" things!  I knew exactly what you meant!  And I didnt' for a moment think that you condoned this cutesy name breeding stuff!

I'm glad that our OP stuck around though.  My first post was not very welcoming!  And mine wasn't the only one!

I understood your point completely, but wanted to clarify (for others benefit really) that although there are reponsible people carefully blending breeds out there.... they are DEFINITELY a very tiny minority.  Rather than risk it, if you "just" want a pet dog, I think you are safer to go to a shelter, or the breeder of a "proper breed".  After all, there are a myriad of breeds already here and established to choose from, surely ONE of them suits your (general) needs? Smile

Wanted to update.............we are still looking. I live in the state of Missouri and in talking to a breeder yesterday on the phone........I learned some things........some of which I didn't know but do now. I didn't know that in the Mid-west Missouri is the top state for puppy mills and they've been closing them down..........which is a good thing. That the Humane Society of United States is trying to close down all breeders in the United States.........which I find is wrong because there is responsible breeders out there. So in all that to say......we are still searching.

I keep thinking of the Chinese Crested suggestion... I don't know about anyone else but I would love more Cresty pics!  Smile

    Good luck in your search.

Yep.  Missouri and PA are both bad puppy mill states.  And sadly, for every one that they shut down, three more crop up.

Do you have a PetsMart anywhere near?  They typically have at least one rescue group in house on the weekends.  You might call a few and find out what rescues they have in and go from there to find a website or a phone number.  And some pet stores do adoption days in conjunction with rescues.  Just a thought.

Unfortunately, I don't know any rescues in MO.  Someone else here may though.

    • Gold Top Dog

Did you try www.petfinder.com????  I did a random search under a handfull of MO zip codes and there are pages of dogs!

Just adding in, we adopted Simba from Petco(same thing basically :P) when his rescue group was there one time. Glenmar's idea is good too! :D
