Getting a new dog??

    Getting a new dog??

We are going to get a new puppy and we are trying to decide between a Multipoo and a Shi Chon Po. Does anyone have these kind of dogs and if you do how are they and how was it training them?

    Thanks, Tammy

    Hello.  Welcome to idog.

If I were going to get a mixed breed, it would be a mix from the shelter or a rescue, and not a pretend breed from an irresponsible breeder, but, that's just me.

Agreed! I'm sure you can find a dog like that in a shelter just waiting for a home. Good luck! :)

Welcome. People on this board will be glad to give you advise on raising and training a pup, and we all know the anticipation and excitement of picking one out.  But be sure you understand that Multipoo and Shi Chon Po are not breeds, but are cross bred dogs with made up names.  The pups are probably going to be too cute for words.  We find though that these cute names generally indicate pups from a  back yard breeder or a puppy mill.  It would be best if you asked the source to see the parents, to see about health and welfare of their dogs.  Crossbred pups are frequently available at rescues, where they have been checked medically and have been observed for behavior and personality.  Which ever you chose, best of luck.

Well I agree that these are mixed dogs..........and maybe I should of just put that. I just said them that way so I didn't have to write their breed names out. Sorry if I upset anyone.

No one is upset with you - don't misunderstand.

We're trying to protect you from spending hundreds of dollars on a sick, mixed breed pet store dog.

Check out your local breed rescues - and read up about puppy mills. You'll be shocked, and sickened.

Oh I'm totally against puppy mills. I have done lots of research in breeders and such and I'm not spending lots of money on a dog. I have been looking at shelters around my area and we need a small dog and they don't really have them around here. I totally get where you guys are coming from.

We've seen some people buy what were advertised as pure bred dogs with guarantees on health, and they wound up spending lots of money on poorly bred sick dogs, and then gone through the pain of losing a pup.  Check out your source carefully.  With a little luck, your getting a family member who will be around for a lot of years.  Research is important.

We mention the rescues because there are a lot of dogs-good dogs- looking for a forever home.  Either way you go, your still welcome.

Not to be harsh, but anyone intentionally breeding these mixes is a backyard breeder or puppy mill.  Why not settle on one breed and find an ethical breeder?

If you can't find what you're looking for in a shelter or rescue, what about a maltese from a reputable, ethical breeder? Or a toy poodle? Or a shih tzu? I just don't get why you'd want to buy an intentionally bred mixed breed (those are the dogs usually bred by BYB's and PM's).

IMHO, not saying this to be mean, but the "poo" mixes (aka: designer dogs) I've come in contact with have always been the most highstrung, ill-tempered dogs.

I also think, that if you are going with a breeder, settling on one breed will give you better chances of finding a reputable breeder. Alternatively you could try contacting rescues in your area or around, and see if maybe you could find a dog that suits you close to you, or even maybe a bit further away.

The thing with mixed breeds is, they can come out either which way. They could completely take after one or the other breed, or be anywhere in between on the spectrum, so if you get a mixed breed, you have 2 choices. Either you know what the mix is, then you educate yourself on the breeds included and be prepared for typical breed trades to come out either which way. Or, if you don't know, you will just have to see your dog as it is, and see how it developes.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to persuade you to get a pure bred dog and I'm by no means trying to be snobby about this. I have a Mutt at home myself (as do many other forum members here) and I love him dearly. Just telling you how it is. Smile

I really hope you can find the right dog for you!

Thank you Janet........at least with your reply I didn't feel attacked for a choice we were looking at. I know these dogs are mixed breed..........I have had a mixed breed before and she was a great dog. For one we are looking at these dogs..........not totally convinced of them but wanted to ask opinions not to feel attacked.

Where do you live? My local shelters have a TON of small, cute mixes and purebreds.

Why did you want a mixed breed, over a pure bred? Is there something specific you're looking for in temperament or coat?? I hope you find your perfect match, and have lots of fun looking. New pets can be such a joy (or a nightmare, if you end up duped by a bad breeder).

Many, if not most members here have mixed breeds, there's nothing wrong with a mixed dog.  However there is something wrong with intentionally mixing dogs to make money.  If you are not totally convinced, I'd go with your gut.
