TV host charged with animal cruelty...

Shouldn't a place like this KNOW that there *could* be problems with certain breeds?  After all, they are supposed to be the professionals.

I have busted my BUTT for over a year working with Sheba on her fear issues and I'll keep right on working with her until she's not so afraid.  But to put her on a treadmill, exhaust her and then force her to confront the stuff she's afraid of?  I can't even imagine doing something like that to her.  She's a challenge and she requires every ounce of my attention when we walk around people to KEEP her from being reactive, but we're making progress, and one day, maybe, she won't be so danged afraid of everything.  I just can't see how forcing her to face her fears would be any more effective than forcing ME to face mine.  Force ME to face a snake and I can promise my heart rate is going shoot so high that I *might* just die of sheer fright.  I'm not joking about that.  Many of us have irrational fears and we function without being forced to confront them.  If you exhausted me so that I couldn't run and brought snakes to me, I think I'd find some inner reservoir of strength so I could get the HECK out of Dodge!

Glenda why should they know more than a vet, this is after all a medical problem? Many vets are clueless on breed specific issues, so are many people who own certain breeds or even people that breed them. having contact with many many dogs of various breeds is a lot more likely to make you a generalist rather than a specific knowledge sort of person. Trainers are more likely to tell you IME that your breed is aggressive, hard to train, or not trustworthy with kids...than know anything about a health issue, they do have breed specific knowledge or expectations, but much of it is negative IMO, for my breeds.

Part of why I like Cesar is because he has no such bias or assertions to offer...either that small breeds need coddling, don't need to be trained, or should be treated like kids, nor a large strong breed should be tough, unafraid, aggressive, etc.

I wouldn't expect a trainer at any facility to "know" about EIC in my Lab...if I had one. Now, if I was going to field train my dog..maybe.

As to fear facing...I've seen the confrontation method work with people. Hypnosis is another option for us...but not for dogs. LOL...

If he's liable than he's liable...if the dog has some underlying condition then I suppose that'll come out also...and if it leads to changes and improvements at his place then something positive will come from it..IMO. But at the end of the day those that love him will still love him, and those that hate him will hate him...such is life!

Any animal or human forced to work to exhaustion is in serious danger of permanent injury and/or collapse. They don't have to have some rare genetic disorder. Inflicting this kind of treatment on any animal is abusive even if the poor dog doesn't end up half-dead.
Milan's methods are dangerous, cruel, and completely outdated. They make good TV because they are violent and confrontational. They do not produce happy, stable, trusting, well-behaved dogs. Alpha roll, come on. Totally discredited 20 years ago. Anyone who STILL uses it is clearly in out of touch and in need of an education.

    Gina,

    Great post! Thank you!

I totally agree mudpuppy.  Sadly those "out of control" dogs didn't need to be there.  In 99.999% of the cases, if the owners had put in the time and effort needed, those dogs wouldn't have EVER reached that point.  Unfortunately we have turned into a nation of people who fit the defination of a sociopath....we want what we want when we want it.  More and more and more folks don't WANT to put any effort into anything, like raising their children or training their dog.  They want the easy way, and they want it NOW.

Gina, yes, sorry, but ANY place that is going to use something such as exhaustion therapy at the LEAST should insist on a complete vet check before starting anything.  If for nothing else, to limit their own liability, but preferrably because they give a rodents rear end about the dogs they are supposed to be helping.

we want what we want when we want it

    LMAO

That was the key to understanding men given to me almost 20 yrs ago by a male college professor to a room of women students!   It has served me well all these years and to now find it used to explain sociopaths had me spitting my drink out!

    Thanks for the laugh!

Ya know what I'd love lol...how evil is this....to do a nationwide survey of people who love the man, hate the man...and are neutral...then ask what breeds they have or have trained...now THAT I think would be really eye opening. I have my theory on the likely results....and the likely reasons why...;o)

I know a client of Cesars...and I know his dogs...so I'm 100% fine with thinking Cesar is a good guy, who gets results...and the results stick if the owner makes the effort.

I also know a 'hater" who attended a seminar to heckle, and ended up a convert lol...so again 100% fine with the man trying to help people out.

Interesting discussion...but getting a bit circular.
