TV host charged with animal cruelty...

Oh I agree, I'm not trying to make light of it.  I think something went very wrong. What I was trying to say is the media is not known to describe things exactly as they happened, they put their own spin on it.  Hopefully we will hear what really went down and I do hope the people involved were fired!

OK, have stayed out of this long enough.

I've never thought much of the mans methods.....and I think that his staff just followed his lead in this instance.  Yep, the owner is a Hollywood producer, but how many of US would immediately file a suit??  I don't think he waited an unreasonable amount of time and I dont really think he filed the suit to coincide with the start of his new show.

that something like this would happen in what is supposedly a professional facility is downright sad.

That's how I was raised. Mom was alpha and there was no debate about it. She also clicker trained us. If we were doing something and she snapped her finger and pointed, we froze in our tracks because any further infraction would leave to a whipping, and grounding, and no desert. Though there were plenty of good times, there was also immediate physical punishment (negative conditioning) where we learned to behave in order to avoid punishment. The last time she struck me, she slapped me in the face for laughing at the dinner table. I was 16. My skin felt a little stingy but her hand hurt for three days. After that, no more physical punishment. Any punishment after that was banishment from the house, such as the time I changed jobs for health reasons without consulting her first. She ejected me from the house. Her way or the highway, literally.

OTOH, I have manners, respect my elders, I have never been arrested or in jail, I have a work ethic that has largely gone out of style, and I still love women.

Gina, I think you hit the nail on the head. I've admired some of the work he has done, though I don't employ a majority of his techniques. And he may not be perfect, as none of us is.

OTOH, such is the liability of owning a business. And, like most initial reports, we don't know all of the facts. And the whole thing may settle out of court in secondary arbitration and then we'll never know. Nor should NGC be sued.

I like his show and although some methods he uses my be extreme, dont you agree that those are extreme cases?  He doesnt alpha roll EVERY dog or anything, he does it with dogs that are not responding to his intial treaments... often dogs who are biters and will possibly be put down if he cant help them.  So, I see absolutely nothing wrong with doing what you have to do to save the dogs life and get it to behave, he is not beating or hitting them or anything like that, so I just dont see where all the ridicule comes from.

Anyway, he IS responsible for those people and should obviously be more involved in what goes on while he is away.  It makes you think about what really does go on there, and how many times dogs may have been treated badly... all the producer and publicity stuff aside, something happened that shouldnt have.

I still like him, as he is not the one who did it, but I sure as heck wouldnt want my dog to go to that facility!  And if it came out that he does do that or taught them to do that, well of course my opinion of him would change... either way hes gonna have trouble convincing people to entrust their dogs to him and his facility.

I just don't understand how people can be so cruel to animals.  I have seen far too many stories about animal abuse lately.

Do you think the Principal of a school is responsible for his employees if several of his teachers gang raped a student? I sure do.

If I am going to take my dog to a training facilty I am entrusting my DOG, my BABY, an animal that trusts me to care for her and protect her--they sure as hell had better have a handle on the people they employ (especially for the money he charges).

If the same thing had happened to Sally you had better believe I would sue the facilty, just as I would sue if my horse trainer's employees beat my horse horribly. Actually it would be nice to see the employees who did this to the dog thrown in jail.

The technique that went awry in this situation is pretty commonly used by Cesar and his employees.  The idea is that you take a fearful (or aggressive) dog, and push it to it's limits using extreme physical exercise.  The dog is then subjected to the stimuli causing the adverse reaction.  As the dog recovers from the exercise in the presence of the stimulus he can quickly be desensitized to it.  Done carefully this method can be  very effective.  The person subjecting the dog to the extreme physical exercise was not paying close enough attention, and the dog got hurt.

Cesar should be sued and held responsible...as should the employee.

Do you honestly think an employee of Cesar Milan's would be using techniques at HIS facility he did not believe in and use himself?? He most likely taught his employees to use that technique. In any job an employer trains an employee how to do the job and has rules to follow.

Employers for the most part hire people who believe in their company, have the same etchics, etc. If Cesar were against the methods that employee used, then the choke collars and treadmills wouldn't even be at his facility. Yes, in this case it got very extreme and an innocent dog paid the price for it.

Excellent point.  Our training facility employs positive reinforcement and clicker training.  Instructors are not allowed to use training collars other than a head halter at the facility.  When asked for ways to solve problems, we are to instruct using only positive methods.  When dogs are in day care, the employees only use positive training and redirecting to enforce rules.  Trainers who don't wish to follow these criteria are informed that there are other businesses where they may feel more comfortable.  Everything we do in the school building reflects the business owner since she signs our paychecks.  If one of the trainers wants to go home and helicopter her dog, that's her business, as long as it's not done or encouraged at school.  (And that's obviously an extreme example...)

I think something that hasn't been mentioned here is that yes, Cesar of course probably uses the technique himself.  However, I wonder exactly how much training or knowledge about what he was doing the employee actually had.  These trainers need to know exactly what they are doing when dealing with aggressive dogs and these extreme techniques.  That's why although I love watching his show, I'd never use his techniques myself.

However, then I'm thinking maybe this dog had some underlying medical issue that caused him to become so exhausted??  Maybe a heart problem or something??  Was he in good health, did they say?

I don't understand the trauma to his leg area.

    Laywers suck.

People want to control their dogs. Somebody shows them how. They don't like it.. sue.

If these people had kids, we'd be watching them on Nanny911. It's just another case of some idiot that wanted a dog and had no clue how to raise one.

    I totally disagree jman.

Me too.  This was NOT an agressive dog.  This was a FEARFUL dog......big difference.  And you'd better believe that if someone flat out abused one of my dogs that way, and tried to call it training, I'd be calling my lawyer too......and I think this country has gone totally SUE CRAZY.

An underlying heart condition isn't likely to cause tracheal damage.................
