If you cross two different breeds, you get mutts. You do not create a new breed because these mutts will not breed "true".

If that's the case, then there's probably not a pure breed on the planet who is not a mutt.

I was referring to a first generation cross.  New breeds can, of course, be created the same way that the current breeds were created.

he seemed to think that two sperm could implant one egg, thus making twins..

Multiple sperm do not create twins.  Twins occur when there are multiple eggs and/or an egg that divides.

Egg division (multiple births) usually occurs after fertilization, but sometimes before fertilization and without cell division (two eggs in one egg sack).  In the latter case each egg could be fertilized by a different sperm.

If two sperm fertilize a single egg and the egg survives, all kinds of strange things can happen.  There is just too much DNA.  If the egg divides at this point all the DNA is duplicated.  The "identical" twins can be very different because each egg must eliminate some of the DNA.

One egg fertilized by two male sperm (Y1 and Y2) can result in a male with Y1 chromosomes in the blood stream and Y2 chromosomes in the sperm.  One egg fertilized by two female sperm (X1 and X2) can result in a female with X1 chromosomes in the blood stream and X2 chromosomes in the eggs.  This type of individual can actually be accused of not being the parent of their own children.

If one egg is fertilized by one male sperm and one female sperm, things really get strange.  Some of the person's cells will be male and some will be female.  Depending on the percentages the person's reproductive organs can be male, female, or some combination.  The person's appearance may or may not match the genitalia.

I once watched an interviewer on TV talking to a woman (uterus, ovaries) who looked like a middle-aged man complete with a receding hairline.  She dressed in men's clothes because otherwise she looked like a man in drag.  She used men's restrooms because otherwise she got nasty looks and cops were called.

and the world just keeps getting stranger lol

enjoyed reading all your replies, not sure if we have all come to a conclusion though lol. my three dogs are all cross breeds in fact my youngest is one of the pups resulting in the elilict affair the cocker had with the jack russel, they are all lovely dogs. alot of pedigrees are no longer like there oringinal breed such as the basset is to low and suffers from a lot of back problems and the english bull dog with its extra short nose, some breed standards are going to far and risking the dogs health.
i do agree that people are going a bit mad over this designer dog thing, but then again arent all dogs really cross breeds when you come down to it.

i think the issue is that when there's such an overpopulation problem, it's just unnecessary to "breed" mutts.

Right.  Especially when it sounds like the sis intends to sell them as pets.  People who crossbreed to develop new varieties or breeds usually cull dogs that end up with traits they don't want or keep VERY close track of the dogs that do make it beyond puppyhood.  You never get the results you're going for after just one breeding.  People breeding this way are in it for the long haul and typically are breeding to create or improve on a specific working ability.

my sister has an american cocker spaniel she had her mated with a jack russel and 2 months ago had a healthy litter of 7 pups. next year she wants to breed her with an american cocker spaniel. the arguement i am having with my partner is that he says she will not be able to sell them as pedigrees cause she was preveasly mated with the jack russel, and that once a pedigree bitch is mated with another breed she is ruined, i dont beleive this to be true wot do you think? please help me to resolve this thanx

It's not the Bitch that's Ruined, It's the woman who was responsible for breeding such a thing that's ruined in the "Purebred" world.

    jackcocks or cockjacks

I was thinking "Cocker Jack" - like a Cracker Jack without the toy prize

I love it.  And every puppy comes with a prize trinket!

my other gripe is the prices some rescues charge for older "secondhand" dogs.
250 or 350??? most people see that price and say "heck... i can get a PUPPY with PAPERS for that price! and then i can make it what i want!" some rescues are driving away potentially great homes because of the prices they charge.

I totally agree with your statement.  I was originally looking for a rescued cocker, but the local rescue never returned my emails of interest and did not list any contact phone numbers on their website.  Plus, most of the adoption fees were $200 plus.  I wouldn't have minded paying that for the right dog, but I was a little shocked at first.

i have a hypothetical question.. and nothing more than that...

why do people want to "create" a new breed anyway?

I have heard alot about the "poo" crossbreeds being designed for those who have allergies, since poodles are non-shedding dogs.  So, for those who are allergic to dogs may be able to still have a dog if it is genetically able to avoid shedding.  The thing is, with all of the "designer dogs" out now, that can't be the main motivation for breeding.  It seems to have become a craze to mate every breed possible with a poodle.

OT, but I was absolutely appalled the other day when a friend of mine who has a male poodle asked me if I was interested in breeding Reesee with her poodle to make CockaPoos.

    hi
i am the sister with the american cocker spaniel she is 3 yrs old very healthy as well as good family background she has a very good temperment as does the jrt all the puppies have exceptionally good homes planned before the pups were born i am in touch with all new owners and also have a site for them to visit which includes a forum for any questions they might have regarding anything at all to do with these pups all owners are aware they are to let me know if for any reason they cannot keep their dog and i am very willing to take him/her back they were brought up very well wormed as and when needed and left with 1st vaccination and full vet check also fed on high quality food etc i was advised by my vet that jrt cross acs is 1 of the best mixes health wise all pups had very good temprements like the parents and left very freindly happy confident loving pups IF my bitch is bred again it wont be untill next year as i do know to wait a FULL year before hand she will have a full medical 1st and they will also have new homes planned 1st or the mating will not go ahead she will then be spayed

what is your reason for breeding this dog?  so you like her temperament ? so what?  Cockers used to be tough little hunting dogs before people like you ruined them.

A "full medical" is not sufficient. You should not breed any dog that has not been OFA certified for hips and elbows, and for cockers, there is a long list of genetic diseases you need to CERTAIN your dog doesn't carry before breeding. These genetic diseases are caused by people like you, who breed irresponsibly. Dogs who never should have been born suffer horribly because of you and people like you.
