Spin-off of do you let your dog lick your face..

The only plates she's allowed to lick are if we use paper.  She has her own set of silverware that she can use and then they go in the dishwasher.  I don't use them at the same time.  I try not to use them at all but do sometimes if they are the only ones clean.

We don't allow plate or silverware licking...simply because I discourage them to give us any attention when we are eating.   They are allowed to lick the spoon I use to prepare their food though.

They have their eat time; and we have ours...and they know it.  As a result, we can sit down to eat and not be hounded by three large dogs.  Smile

We don't allow plate or silverware licking either. I hate dogs pestering me while I eat. They know that once we are done eating we will feed them and they wait their turn. Plus I have a beagle - let her do it once, she will be there forever. When we are in the kitchen they know the kitchen/dining room boundary line and sit right there watching us cook or bake making sure we don't drop something. Generally if we drop something, they are allowed to eat it.

We usually eat on the couch and Sadie will sit beside me while I eat, but she knows she is not allowed to try and steal anything from my plate. She generally just lies there and sleeps. Timmy lies at our feet sleeping, those are their normal places when we are on the couch.

Letting my dogs have my plate when I'm done has never made them into beggars. They've always known there's a personal space radius and they have to wait until I call them over for the goodies! T-Bone is learning this now.

All my dishes are pre-washed by the dog as long as what we ate that night won't harm her.

I don't let her eat off my fork and then reuse it, but I have fed her off of forks and spoons before (she's a proper lady, Dahlia is! lol).

Bailey gets to lick plates/forks whenever its a food hes allowed to have. Leftovers usually get saved as special treats for him. It doesnt make him a begger at all, he knows when im done ill put the plate on the floor for him to "clean"

I think that the liklihood of turning a dog into a "beggar" by feeding it from your plate depends completely on your dog.

Here, if I were to feed from my plate, I can guarantee that Shooter, Schatzi, Brutus & Chyna would beg everytime that I sat down to eat.  Bevo, Angel, & Brinxx would not.

Yeah, I agree. Rascal is only a "beggar" to people who like it and *constantly* slip him food from the table (like BF). If you don't feed him from the table for more than a few minutes, he goes away and minds his own business.

I let Rascal lick our plates, silverware, etc., but I always wash them thoroughly (preferably in the diswasher on hot) before using them.

BF's family just leaves their dishwasher open when it's dirty so their boxer can come and "pre-wash" all the plates! I almost died laughing the first time I saw the open dishwasher with the stupid wiggling boxer butt sticking out of it, accompanied by the sound of, "SLUUUUURP! SLUUUUURP!"

I don't let my dogs lick the plates.  It wouldn't bother me much since they go in the dishwasher but DH would probably have a problem with the idea.  He's a bit germ phobic sometimes. lol  Twister will sit next to me if I'm eating a snack on the couch but he keeps his eyes completely averted.  My dogs aren't allowed to beg food while we are eating and this is his way to stay close, in case I need a cleanup and still comply with the no begging rule.

I don't think I would share food with my dogs, like licking an ice cream together.  They lick parts of their bodies that I don't want to share.

I don't allow it but my Dad used to have this trick he would pull when company was over for dinner. When he finished his dinner, he would casually take his plate a put it on the floor by his feet. Our dog would lick that plate clean while my Dad carried on his dinner conversation with our guests. Then my Dad would get up from his chair, pick up the plate and nonchalantly put it back in the cupboard. We got some pretty funny reactions from our guests. LOL!

A man after my heart!  I may have to try this when some non dog person comes over for dinner.  Wait, no one like that ever comes over for dinner. lol

    That's hilarious:-))

At my house, definitely pre-wash before the dishwasher.  And, I don't have beggars either.  They have it really together about the routine of it all...

This is a very big part of why the dogs don't get to lick us in the face or clean our plates/silverware.

It's really common to hear us saying "Brutus, stop licking your who who."  "Shooter, leave that alone." or "Bevo, if you don't stop licking that, it's going to fall off."

ROFL!  spit water on my keyboard at "stop licking your who who".  I have a friend with a male dog and she says, "Angus, put your lipstick away".

    HAHAHA "Lipstick"!!!

Brutus is the only one who, is obviously, "happy" to see me when I get home in the evenings.  DH has gotten into the habit of announcing that "The red rocket is prepared for lift off." as Bru is doing his kidney bean dance around me.  It's quite disturbing...
