Annie, you're in the process of fixing all of your babies problems now, so I think that you fall in the "good mom" category.
Coming from someone who has, recently, dealt with a dog with neck issues....use the pred. The biggest mistake that I made with Bevo is trying to avoid using pred. He was miserable, & showed no improvement for a week because I chose to wait to see if he would improve on pain relief/anti-inflammatories. He didn't improve, & in the process of trying to avoid pred, I may have, inadvertently, caused more damage to his neck in the process. The anti-inflammatory dose of pred is much, MUCH less than the immunosuppressive dose.
If you decide to use the pred, expect him to drink & pee LOTS more than normal. Bev is on Denosyl to help protect his liver while he's on his moster dose of prednisone. On the advice of our holistic vet, we've started him on a glucosamine/chondrotin/MSM supplement, along with Knox NutraJoint to try to protect his joints as much as possible. We are also using large doses of fish oil which is believed to act as an anti-inflammatory. We do massage daily, (white flower oil is GREAT!) & he's seeing the accupuncturist weekly, although we will be reducing his visits soon.
We're sending speedy recovery vibes to everyone. Give everyone some lovin from me.
