What KarissaKS and Joyce said is so true. When we were in our 30's, everyone we met had babies and toddlers, with lifestyles much different than ours. Several people we spent time with were in their 50's -- with grown kids no longer at home, more time and income to go out to dinner, concerts, whatever. Now that we're in our mid-40's, many in our age group are busy with the activities of pre-teen children and other family commitments. We still have acquaintances who are older than we are, but we've also added a couple who are a lot younger, because they don't have kids (yet) and are able to do more socializing.
Having friends in a wide age range means you have a lot of options for things to do --- I know which person is likely to want to poke around a craft show with me, or which person would prefer a loud concert, for example. I have a certain friend who loves indie/foreign films and another who's my first choice for the big blockbusters.
By the way -- I love the phrase Ron used, "Sandbox Set." That is very appropriate! No matter how many people one meets during a lifetime, there's something unique about the relationships one had with tiny friends from nursery school or the neighborhood sandbox!
