Emma saw a fox!

    Emma saw a fox!

Yesterday, we were on one of our regular walks. The area where we go is a paved road, surrounded by swamp and heavily wooded areas. I think there is a hunting club nearby, as well.... We've always seen lots of birds, rabbits, raccoons, armadillos, possums, etc etc. Emma knows how to react in just about any situation.

Yesterday, a gray fox crossed the street right in front of us! Emma broke her heel, and flew out after the fox. OUCH! Emma's mom almost lost an arm! PRT were bred to hunt fox. This thing is a smidge taller than Emma, with a lot of doggy traits. It moves a lot like a dog, and it was very nonchalant about the whole thing. HOW did she know she was supposed to chase it, and how in the world do these little bitty dogs hunt prey bigger than them? It's always baffled me how Dachshunds would hunt badgers. This was MY first encounter with a fox, as well. It's amazing how tough a dog would have to be to go up against that.

Too cool, except for the dislocated arm.  Twister would have been right there with her if he saw a fox!  I bet Emma will be on high alert next time you pass that spot.

for starters fox have a VERY strong odor to dogs...so she likely knew it was NO dog Wink. I have seen housecats take full grown rabbits, and foxes don't often grab anything larger for themselves, aside from the odd housecat, or fawn.

Beautiful animals. Grey Foxes are my favorite aside from the "cross" variant of the Red Fox.

I've always been amazed at how tough the doxies are.  Shooter has caught 6 possums in our back yard in the past 4 months.  He knows exactly how to catch them so that he doesn't get bit.  Even though, I am confident that he can handle the possum, I worry a little every time.

Ohhh, I didn't even think about it's smell!

It was very, very beautiful, and very cool to see. I'm sure she will be on high alert. I just hope she doesn't yank my arm off, this time, LOL. That's not something I'm used to.

Emma has gotten grown rabbits, but never anything bigger. She's caught plenty of mice and birds, and young rabbits, then the rare grown rabbit. She's never caught a possum and I'm not sure why.... Maybe they don't venture into the yard? She isn't out much, at night...

I wonder if squirrels have a strong odor to dogs, too.  I've noticed neighborhood dogs on their walks will sort of circle the big pine trees at the end of the street sniffing all around the base, then stand there looking up.
