Chuffy, what a great picture!!!
I think you should be able to find chaps (cheapish full chaps, or nice, perhaps full-grain half chaps) for about 50 English pounds. Assuming the relative prices there are similar to here. I like full chaps to keep me warm, but they're not as flexible as straight breeches and I don't like how they feel "sticky" (because then I feel "slidey" in breeches/tall boots).
I know nothing about this website, but here's a sample of one store and its stock of half chaps:

There are a lot of British members on the Chronicle of the Horse forums, also, and the people there always seem to enjoy responding to the "What's the best tack store in [XYZ area]?" posts.
I DEFINITELY recommend trying some on. Measuring your leg and trying to mail-order usually ends badly, and every brand fits a little bit differently.
I've actually had really good luck with "cheapo" half-chaps (the $30-ish suede ones with velcro), even when I was riding a few hours every day. They always held up for several years. Maybe I just wasn't expecting much out of them!
