    Shifting Feed Regimen

My Rocky is driving me crazy.  I have been free feeding the cats forever.  I'm going to have to change that now due to Rocky's behavior.  I wish I could catch him in the act when I have a camera handy, because it is kind of funny.  Unfortunately, when I catch him and go get the camera, he stops, of course.

He has this bad habit of sitting in front of the feeder licking his paw and touching the kibble to get the crumbies.  Then, he sits there and enjoys the crumbies (dusty crumbies, you know what I mean).  During this process he is in inadvertantly (?) spilling the food out on the floor.  I can't tell you how many times I'll walk by the feeder and there is literally 2 cups worth of food on the floor next to the feeder.

So, I've decided to stop the free feeding and start them on a schedule (like the dogs).  Its going to be a big shift for them.  I thought what I'd do is fill bowls in the morning, leave them out for a couple of hours.  After that time, pull them up.  Then do the same thing in the evening.  Then eventually, shorten that time span to 1/2 hour.

    Thoughts?  Suggestions?

LOL Love that image of your gourmet cat picking on kibble! Smile

I think your idea is pretty good, but of course the change will let them a little surprised "No food all day Confused" What we did was to let the food out for an hour and then no more until night (we feed them twice a day). So my cat pretty quickly got the idea of go eat everything! We also give them a specific amount to control how much everyone is eating. My female cat got used to that since she came and they both do good: one eats in the laundry room and the other in the office. Sometimes the bowls lay around all day, but they are pretty much empty when I look at them.

    Good luck!

Peaches was free fed, but due  to her eating way too fast and a lot, at one time led to her puking. Now she gets 1/4 canned food in the a.m., 1/8 of a cup of dry for all day, another 1/4 canned at night and maybe a little dry for a snack. She got used to this fairly quick.
