So which Christian holidays are you being forced against your will to observe again?
I didn't say I celebrate anything against my will. I come from a Catholic family. Just because I'm
not at all religious doesn't mean my family isn't. I just don't
understand why it's okay for Christian holidays to be work holidays,
but not a Muslim one? I'm all for more holidays!
And no, labor day isn't religious..didn't say it was. I do think
it's weird that they would remove labor day as a work holiday, but I
don't think it's our "right" to have it be one..nor do I think making
the last day of Ramadan a holiday is offensive or a big deal in some
way...who cares? My point was no one complains about the Christian
holidays..so why complain about a Muslim one?
My
complaint is not that it is Muslim, but that it is replacing another
holiday. If they want to *add* it, fine. If they want to give people
the *option,* fine. I am Christian and part Irish and would not think
it made any sense to replace Labor Day with Good Friday or St.
Patrick's Day. It's Labor Day, families and friends get together (at
least around here) on that day. Give people the choice or leave it
alone.
ETA: I really don't think that you can count Christmas as a religious holiday anymore. Some people observe it that way, but according to a number of people on here and in other conversations (if I recall correctly from a Christmas discussion a while back) it is not something that should be considered religious, that it should be celebrated secularly. You can't have it both ways. We either see it (from a workplace standpoint) as a religious holiday given for the benefit of Christians, or as a secular holiday that the majority of Americans regardless of their religious beliefs, celebrates in some form. I even have a Jehovah's Witness co-worker who gives her grandson gifts around Christmas time and just tells them they are just gifts, NOT for Christmas, just because.
Now, having said that, if you are still stuck on the forced observance of a "Christian" holiday thing------if Muslim workers wanted to trade Christmas for Ramadan (as long as there were enough workers on staff to be safe), I wouldn't have an issue at all.
