    Teaching 'stand'

I put this in the training section but didn't get much.  I want a command for stand and a way to teach it.  For instance if he is in a down stay and you want him to stand.  I tried what someone told me, which was to get him to reach for a treat so he rises but he can reach while sitting so that's what he did.  He started to get confused because he was touching my hand but that wasn't what I wanted (been doing touch for a couple of years now)

So trainers a little help please - keep in mind he is tall so some things that might work with a shorter dog (like above) don't seem to work.

I would try a modified version of what you did that didn't work. LOL! Basically take a treat but move it forward so that if he wants it, he has to move forward into a stand. That's what I do with Eko. Mind you, we haven't gotten a command associated with it yet, but I've been planning on "stand." I'm creative like that.;)

i just do the same thing as with teaching down/stay. you say "down" right? and then say "stay" right after? well..... the dog already knows "stay".. so what i do is say "Up" .. pat my leg as if telling her to come, that gets her up off the ground and ready to move forward.. then i say "stay" and she stops in her tracks. to start with Kaydee was already pretrained with down/stay, sit/stay, but didnt know the part about stand/stay.. it didnt take her long to figure it out. so now all i have to do is say "Up" ... or "On your feet". once in a while she'll move her front foot as if she is going to come to me - sometimes she tries to guess what i'm going to say next - and in such situations i just tell her to stay put, or say "no"

i hope that helps some..... like i said, it was easy for me because someone else did half the work with her in the down/sit/stay department.

This is what I did for Kenya - with her in a sit I put a good treat in my hand and hold it in front of her nose, I move it forward, but also slightly to the left.  For some reason, the slight movement to the left makes her slightly turn her head which gets her standing.  I don't know why it worked but it did.  Also, when I started, I would take a step forward as well.  It's not totally proofed yet, but we did a rally match a few months ago that was a higher level than we were competing and it had a sit-stand and the judge didn't comment, so it must have been OK.  For a moving stand (stopping in a stand), I use a "stop!" command rather than "stand".

Thanks everyone sounds like I was close but need to refine my technique (I use the word technique loosely).  I want to use this specifically for getting up from a down or a sit.  Ideally I'd like him to remain in place, just stand up.  he will do it now if I just step back and do a silent pseudo come.

Thanks again we will have time to try again as it is raining again Stick out tongue
