Are there no doggie day cares near you?

    1. just make a donation to the rescue
    2. we give a $1 refund for every giggle you dog provides
    3. a $5 refund for every out burst of hilarious laughter
    4. $10 refund for every "hound influenced" stupid manuver
    5. If your dog is a complete idiot it stays for free!

    LOL!

[&o]i thought i could trust my local vet who has taken care of both of my dogs for years . on jul 4th of 2003 that all changed. long story short , we dropped 2 dogs off to be boarded and only got one back . one of my dogs wasn't contained properly , actually both , and one went through a screened window to be hit and killed 3 weeks later on i-84. i do have her ashes. thank god my other dog decided not to follow her.please check to make sure who ever you decide to board your dogs with is responsible and reputable. i thought i could trust my vet . i'll never board my dogs with any one ever again.

The boarding thing is tough… because both my two have people issues, we have to board them at a place that can take them with their problems. That pretty much leaves only the greyhound rescue.

Now the one thing I HATE is that my pups aren#%92t going to get more then a total of 45 minutes to an hour a day out of their crate at the rescue. It is one thing for the greys that are just coming off the track and are use to being in a crate 23 out of 24 hours a day, but another for my two that are use to a life in a home.

For me the biggest reason I chose to board at my rescue and forfeit the exercise, is that my dogs LOVE the owners and the daytime workers there.  They handle them so well and my greys get so excited to see them. They also LOVE being around all the other greyhounds and while they are deprived of their regular “at –home” routine, there is a LOT of comfort for them in being in this place versus a totally strange boarding place with other breeds of dogs and strange people.

The only thing I worry about is that they feel they are being abandoned. Prudence had 2 prior homes and JJ 3 prior. So they both know that sometimes when you go back to the rescue your owners never come back…  [:(]

I feel for you Cressida… it is so tough leaving your guys even in your own home with someone you trust, yet alone in a strange environment, a totally different routine and no exercise…[&o]

Odd.  Maybe try a vet clinic.  My vet charges $15 a day per pet. That includes excersize.  Of course, they can only take in 8 dogs at a time, so it's not like they have 50 or so they have to walk in a day.  Usually when I go in there, they are also a client of mine, they have a boarded dog running around the clinic.

I worked at a large boarding kennel years ago (in a west suburb of Chicago - but I won't name names) and they had quite the "extras" rip-off racket going on. They had all these extras they would guilt people into buying... well, guess what? they didn't get most of them. They had a package of three walks a day (maybe 15-20 mins each) - I can't remember the prices of anything it was so long ago... well, they had one girl "walking" dogs in a small enclosure on a long leash with 8 foot fences (they were very afraid of something happening to the dogs and then getting sued). They could board over 150 dogs at a time. I'm not good at math - but if even half of the owners bought walks... only some would be lucky to get one walk a day. There were a bunch of other extras that were not given... so, please be leery of these places... if you're dog isn't there for very long, they will survive just fine on the basics. I had to quit working there after a few weeks when they tried to get me to do "intake" and rip these people off... I just won't lie like that.

been following this thread and totaly agree with Houndlove.
we have tons of places here but almost all charge extra for 'exercise', etc. which includes 30" of play or a 10" walk.
One looks great but will be over $40/day - we are going to have to board Bugsy in late August for over a week - I have been worried sick about it already. he had some separation issues when we got him and sometimes is still freaked out when left alone - we see this more as we are leaving and when we arrive home - fortunately he doesn't tear everything up - i digress.
In addition due to his allergies he has to have HIS food and needs someone that can dose benadryl as necessary.  He is used to several miles walking, several hours of surveying and hunting in the yard, an hour or so of training daily.  We also supplement his diet with raw.  He is a large powerful dog who is NON-aggressive but I fear the 'playgroup' he will be put in due to his size.  He only pees or poops in our yard - always difficult when we travel so I know he will be stopped up for a while.  just dreading it
If we found someone we could trust in the house we would go that route however they would need to be able to handle a young 100lb ball of energy in general but especially on walks because he still has days he wants the squirrel too much. As I said just feel sick and am expecting a very thin Bugsy when I pick him back up from the kennels.  I hope that it doesn't alter his training and behavior much - he will be about 2 when we board him.  And yes I know some of you board and that in general dogs do fine just a nervouse momma here.

FYI a friend has boarded at our vet ( who is very good) and it was a nightmare.  She uses a place that she loves but her dogs needs are very different than mine and I do not think he will do well there.  Just hate it.  Another friend said their dog loves to play with the other dogs so much that she feels fine taking him there - he's like great I get to hng with my buddies - thats the image I am trying to hold on to
    good luck
