Any Problems with Cow Hooves?

why don't you just go to the grocery store and pick up some raw bones?   soup bones, knuckle bones, rib bones, lamb bones, pork bones. All make excellent chewies that are quite safe. And you don't have to worry about the nasty chemicals they use to make rawhides.

Because I don't trust non-organic bones not to be contaminated with lead and other heavy metals. However I can visit one of the game processors that are within a few hours drive of here to try to get some moose or caribou bones. I just have to pick a day when it's not too icy to drive far. And I'm trying to get some local antlers. In the meantime, I've got a carrot in the freezer for Ole. Big Smile

Oh, and what I didn't say before is that since they go to work with me, and are with me while I teach people how to play musical instruments, Ole needs something to DO. He's very good but he's a young guy who is busy, you know? Sofia vegs out, they both greet people every half hour, but Ole needs something to chew on. Doing a kong is too rowdy while we are trying to play and so are toys. A raw bone would smell and gross some people out, and I'd hate to lose income that way! LOL

On another board it's been suggested that freezing veggies might be an alternative, and that will probably work for Ole dog. He's a nut for frozen things

How funny , I have used frozen veggies for my hounds from puppy up to my grandkids !! It is better than a chewie and They can eat anything they knock off..

I know they are a hazard but Rory is a master chewer! She eats bully sticks too and even though I never reccomend either to dog owners. I know they can splinter BUT nothing else lasts for her. She chews them very well, they dont splinter on her and she has never chipped a tooth but she sits htere with ehr eyes closed adn naws and drools and is in heaven. Nothing else soothes her so well. The white raw hides come out whole in her poop or she throws them back up, she cant have anything white liek that for some reason.

Primo on the other hand does exaclty what everyone says with the cow hooves. He eats em to fast or they splinter and he does well with the white rawhides so I guess it really depends. I would preffer if Rory would agree with any other treats but the cow hoof are a godsend to her.

My guys have hte same issue as others with the hooves... they swallow shardds and then wind up puking them up sometime in the middle of the night on my bedspread. Hehe. When oliver was a pup they were perfect but once he grew and his jaw strength increased... forget it! I haven't found a single toy or treat he couldn't shread so I'm resigned to that. He gets frozen turkey neck.

I gave him a big frozen carrot today while I was at work. It was no longer than 15 minutes and the carrot was gone. OH WELL. It's not exactly long-lasting! And at least it didn't give him gas. The room I teach in could become pretty darn toxic if he had a gas problem...Indifferent  And you can't open a window in Alaska in the winter!

He was a good boy at work anyway, even if he was B-O-R-E-D. He gets plenty of attention from the students and their families every half hour, so it's not too bad for him. Next time I go shopping I'll get a turnip or rutabaga and freeze it. Maybe that will last longer...and I hope the atmosphere stays clear!

I figured that would be the case Bugsy can get through a carrot REAL quick frozen or not.  Good luck with the turnip Wink
