    What's a neti pot?

    • Gold Top Dog

I get strep throat all the time!  The last time I had it was mid January, then before that was late December and before that was October! lol

Yes, get cepacol lozenges and spray, it will numb your throat so you can eat.  Hot hot hot a(as hot as you can get it) tea with sugar and honey.

I found out I have the strep virus always in my body, so when my immune system is weakened or if i am highly stressed out, I get it.  There are pills for it, so if you get it otften, look into seeing if you have the virus all the time.

    What's a neti pot?

A neti pot is a nasal passage cleansing system. Its a ceramic pot (mine sort of reminds me of a genie lamp, lol). You put warm water and sea salt in the pot, stick the end of the pot in one of your nostrils, tip your head to one side, and the warm salt water gently runs through your nasal passages and out the other nostril. You use half of the water and then do the other side.

Its similar to using a nasal spray, but much more gentle. Some people spray things up their nose, or even snort warm water, but the neti pot is a very gentle and effective method. You can get a neti pot at most health stores, mine came from a food co-op.

I highly recommend it if you suffer from allergies, sinus problems, post nasal drip, etc. You'd be surprised at how much stuff comes out of your nose! lol

The friend that recommended it to me has very severe allergies, seasonal mostly, but also to cats, certain fruits, etc. She uses the neti pot and has cut down her allergy medication by half. Its also recommended by Doctor Oz (if anyone watches Oprah).

If you google neti pot you will come up with tons of results. I also think there was a thread in the NDR section a little while ago.

That's really interesting information. When you use the neti pot, does it also go into your throat. I've used saline sprays but usually choke on the stuff runny down my throat Ick!

The water doesn't really go into the throat. I have a pretty bad gag reflex (can't use saline sprays or ear drops for this reason), and am VERY squeamish about using anything, including sprays, medications, holistic remedies, etc. I would sometimes rather suffer than take something, but the Neti pot is different. It does take some getting used to, and when you first use it you may have ear popping, or a weird feeling in your head for the first couple times... I have occasionally felt something in my throat, but its usually mucus that is coming out (graphic, I know, sorry!) I don't think you'll have a problem with the throat thing.

Thanks!! I'm going to buy one. I have allergies and almost constant post-nasal drip. I'd love to find something other than medications to deal with it.

Great! Do it, do it! If you don't like it, you don't have to use it, but I can almost guarantee that you will! Let me know how it goes. Also, I know that they sell salts in the health food store, but according to my neti pot, sea salt is the thing to use, so don't feel as if you have to buy special salts unless you don't have sea salt at home... oh, and, talk with them about tinctures you can put in there as well. The instructions say that if you have an infection, that Goldenseal is a natural antibiotic, and a tincture can help to clear up an infection... there may be something else they recommend!
