    Pet Stores

I know there used to be a post stickied about puppy mills, but is it still here somewhere, because I can't find it?

My friend (a Petland employee) and I have an ongoing debate over Petland's puppies.  I know that they come from puppy mills, but she just doesn't get it.  She firmly believes that they just come from breeders (but of course they do, ones that own puppy mills).  So on Monday she is supposed to be bringing me some pedigrees of the puppies there.  I already know that many of their puppies come from Hunte.  So does anyone know of some good sites that can help me show her that these puppies are from mills?  Anything on mills will be appreciated, especially if it mentions Petland.  I can't stand it when people think that buying these puppies is okay, and this friend is my only friend that doesn't understand my view on pet stores.  Thanks for any and all help!  Smile

Most puppies in pet stores do come from mill. A few do come from back yard breeders. But you can show her that they never come from GOOD breeders. From the Code of Ethics of the Samoyed Club of America:

"The SCA member does not sell, consign, or transfer puppies, or adults to pet shops, wholesale dealers, contest sponsors, or anyone who is known to degrade the Samoyed breed or purebred dogs, or to individuals contemplating breeding and/or sale to the aforementioned."

A couple years ago I randomly selected about eight different breeds, and looked up their code of ethics. They ALL prohibited selling puppies to pet stores or brokers.

If you want to show her the code for multiple breeds, it is pretty easy. Go to http://www.akc.org/ and pick a breed. On the left you will see "National Breed Club." Select that and you will get contact info for the club including their web site. On the web site search for Code of Ethics or Breeders Code of Conduct or something like that.

    Thanks

The best way to make your point would be to tell this friend that pedigrees, in and of themselves, mean NOTHING. Less than nothing. A pedigree is a fancy piece of toilet paper IF the breeder is not ethical. I'm sure there are plenty of pet store pups that sport champions in their pedigrees, after all, it's an advertising point. I can show your friend some fancy AKC pedigrees that I had to send back to the breeder(s) because despite almost every single dog in a 3 gen pedigree having a field or show championship, the pup was a genetic mess Crying
The only thing that matters is the ethics of the breeder and pet sore pups may or may not come from your typical puppy mill, yet none of them are bred by ethical breeders. How do I know this? You cannot be ethical if you sell to a store or any other outlet where the fat of the pups you produce will be unknown. The breeder sells to a broker, and it's the broker than makes the sale to the pet store. So, the breeder doesn't know which store or even what states their pups are being sold to. Some stores are clean with reputable employees, others are disreputable and do not properly care for the pups. The breeder has no control over who purchases the pup. They will likely never hear from 99% of the buyers. So they have no clue as to what problems or advantages are found in their bloodlines. How can you make ANY breeding decisions at all if you have no clue as to what you're producing? The answer is, you simply don't care.
Tell your friend that Petland's pups are sold to the broker for between $50-$150 on average. In turn, the broker might sell the pup to the store for, say, $250 - 300. Some breeds take more, others less. No one reputable can afford to breed a litter by selling pups for $100, unless they are cutting corners, falsifying documents to sell 4,5,6 week old pups as 8 weeks old, so they can get more $ for smaller pups.
It would drive me slowly insane if I didn't know where each of "my" pups were, and have contact with the owners. Good breeders have to stand by their pups and offer a legitimate health guarantee. Breeders who sell to stores wash their hands of the pups, and all responsibility that comes along with breeding. That's not a well bred dog, regardless of what type of pedigree it has. There are no well bred dogs that are sold for $50 ... I bet your friend didn't know that's how much the breeder was initially paid for those designer pups ...
