Okay, not to get too in depth here, but all these replies lead me to a question. I was one of the ones that always heard it was an act of dominance, so I never really questioned it.

Now with the humping of the beds, I can understand that it may feel good, be exciting, etc. But with the humping of another dog, I don't quite understand that theory, because of all the dog-to-dog humping I've seen, the dogs genitals aren't really making contact with the other dog's body (maybe the occasional bump, but ya know what I mean [])...So I can't understand how this would feel good unless there was that contact made. Maybe dogs are different in that sense...or maybe it's just the act of the humping action that feels good or causes excitement. I'm just unsure - sorry for the "detailed" question!

When I say it "feels good" for a dog to hump, I don't necessarily mean - sexually. I liken it to dancing for humans. It can be as overtly sexual (with actual contact made!) or totally innocent - but still a fun thing to do!

All of my dogs hump each other but the girls seem to do it more. The puppies will do it with toys (and sometimes the adult dogs will too).

Sometimes if you pick up a small dog who is afraid they will hang on tight to your arm, like hugging your arm. Often when they do this they start humping your arm. That's a physiologic response. When the dog's front legs grasp anything tightly they start humping. I've seen the mother dogs do this too when they are trying to move their puppies away from soemething.

A male collie I had would do that with his stuff animal. Our saint bernard was starting too get in heat when my brother's dog was around and she did that and I was like what in the world???
