becareful with the coyotes if you have them in abundance around you.

That was one of my primary fears when Grace decided to take off!  I know there are coyotes nearby and I don't know how she would do alone against a bunch of them in the middle of the night.

that is interesting about coon hounds air scenting.  I know that Grace will put her nose to the ground when she is looking for furry things (mice or rabbits around our shed), but Trudy is pretty much heads up looking for birds.  Sight is pretty inportant to the pointing breeds, but both of them will point at something that they can't see.

English Pointers have fox hound, bloodhound and greyhound blended in there, along with a bit of bull terrier for tenacity.

    for DPU...
some of the Coonies never figure it out...Moose ( the english coonhound) could not find his way through an empty field to 60 lbs bag of dog food if it were painted bright orange and had a flag sticking out the top...and others can find a 6 month old morsel of food no bigger than a pencil head 3 feet under the dryer.

from the stance in the picture Marvin looks young...the silly paw slap is such a puppy manuver...
    Who are you fostering for?

The key to Marvin's success is to know what his job is.  After training I have a number of scent games for Marvin to go through.  I fostered a sickly field Pointer and I was lucky to bring out her natural instinct and focus on job of pointing.  That turned her around big time.  It was great shaping the perfect point.  After she got the point down and I advertised her, I had so many inquiries on her nationally.
