Favorite breed according to AKC

    I don't think we've moved for a while...still #5.
Not counting the hunting dogs reg with other places.

Mine are all over the place.  Fergie thinks they made a mistake and Yorkies (#2) should be at the top of the list.  Sequoyah (and Sioux, my Aussie mix) is very happy at #34 and I hope Aussies don't move up - they are not a first-timers dog, and popularity can be a curse, as jones so aptly put it.  Maska is part English Foxhound, down at the very bottom of the list at #155.  I'm happy with that, too.  Rarity has its benefits.

Bevo, I didn't know you had 2 dobes, and a GSD! Lucky! That's a nice german crowd...

The second Dobe & the GSD were dumped at the vet clinic where I work.  The GSD is a foster until I get some of his issues worked out & then I'll rehome him.  The Dobe on the other hand looks to be a full time resident at my home.

If labs are #1 and GSDs are #3, I guess that would put "Max the Mutt" up there at #2??[sm=rotfl.gif]

there are more than 15,000 labs looking for homes listed on Petfinder. Hard to believe they are a "favorite breed" considering that statistic.

OK...OK....this is one of my pet peeves about the AKC.  Who made them the authority on breed popularity?  There are 2 other major registries, that I know of, that register pure bred dogs, The Field Dog Studbook and UKC).  I have an English Setter (97 or 98 on the list (for what it's really worth [&:]), and I also know that approx 500 ESs out there in the US are registered with the AKC and 1500 are registered with the Field Dog Stud Book!  Same with Pointers.  Many hunting dog breeders primarily and only register with the Field Dog Stud Book and UKC and NOT with the AKC.

Does the breed not count if it is not registered with the AKC????

OK....I'll get off my soap box, now.  [;)]

My favorite scent hound is at the bottom of the list as well...Harriers.  What a well kept secret those dogs are! (Don't go telling anyone either)

My all time favorite breed is near the bottom of the list as well.  I've dreamt of being owned by an Otterhound for as long as I can remember.

What great dogs they are too...Like most hounds...they act like they've not a care in the world.  I just think that's too much cuteness for my house!

I think we could all prolly learn a thing or 2 from hounds.  Relax & take a nap. :o)

I was surprised to see border collies as #58, I would think they are more popular then that, I've seen them everywhere but I guess it's only counting the registered dogs so the numbers can be a little off.

No, the numbers are a LOT off. As someone else said, the AKC really gets off pretending it is the be-all end-all of dogness in the US. The vast majority of Border Collies are registered soley in the American Border Collie Association, or the overseas "mother" registry, the International Sheepdog Society, by a factor of ten to one.

This list should more rightly be labeled, ranking of dog breeds registered with the AKC. Not that I'm unhappy to see Border Collies way down there. But these lists are just wholesale promotion of dogs - oooh, I want a whatever because it was in the top ten - the "keep up with the Jones'" factor.

The list that they make is based upon litter registration applications.  It has very little to do with popularity, or that those are well bred dogs.  You can buy an AKC registered dog from a pet store.  It doesn't make the dog better, but it does give AKC more funds for every litter registration fee that is paid.

I very highly doubt that people will look at this list and think ohhh look labs are number one I want one.  But they are likely to see a frisbee comp on tv and get  aborder collie because the one on tv caught them so well, that is how most peopel think, and shop, saddly.  Or aww my neighbour had a lab when I grew up and he was such a great dog lets get one.  It is so sad that people can't just reasearch the breed they want.

When I was breeding cockers my breeder friends and I held our collective breathe HOPING that cockers wouldn't make it into the top ten.  The more popular a breed, the more the byb's want to crank out to "meet the demand".

And now, well, lets just say I'm not happy with gsds being so high up there on the list.  More who need rescue.  Sigh.
