Bear is home!!

    Bear is home!!

Bear came home with me on Friday.  He's a big sweetie pie!

My cats immediately hissed and spit at him and he dropped in his tracks.  It was pretty funny, actually, to see this 70 lb dog terrified by a 7 lb and an 11 lb cat.  Fortunately they are declawed (came that way) or Bear's face would be hamburger by now.

He's settling in a bit.  He's very thin, needs to gain about 10 lbs, but loves his walks and fetching his squeaky toys.  He met the neighbor dogs through the fence and didn't go ballistic.  He was curious, but not barking or anything.

So far I can tell he loves to eat!  The first meal was dog food, but last night I cooked him chicken and rice.  Between the change of food and environment, poopy was a little soft.  And he wasn't terribly keen on the pumpkin.

He's learned quickly where the door is to the backyard and goes out to do his business.  The shelter workers bathed him and put him in a separate room to wait for me so he's not all stinky.  He was sitting at the window when I went to pick him up.  I could see him when I walked in the front door and he looked so cute, started wagging his tail as if he knew I'd come for him.

My concern is that he's got a bit of a cough - not constant, but deep when it starts.  He was given bordatella vaccine when he got to the shelter, but maybe it wasn't fully effective.  I also know that it can be a sign of heartworm.  I thought he was supposed to be tested, but don't see in his paperwork that he was.  His nose isn't running, nor are his eyes.  I am a little scared, but will take him to my regular vet as soon as I can get in.

Barring that, he's a good dog and I'm already in love!

My computer at home is acting up - won't let me online for too long, so I've gotta run.  My boyfriend has the camera, so no pics yet.

Good for you!  Good for Bear, and heck, good for the kitties for letting him know who rules the roost!  I'm so glad you have a new dog, and I'm betting the cough is KC....the vaccine only covers 3 or 4 of the 7 strains, and it's not a huge big deal.....not so long as you keep on top of it so it doesn't go into pnemonia.

Dasher, here's the link with Bear's pics while still in doggy jail.  I'm not sure what he is.  Shelter guessed Newfie mix.  He's black except for the white chest, front legs, and back feet.  The legs and paws are spotted.

Glenda, I think you're right about the cough.  After I posted on Sunday, I noticed he had  a runny nose, kinda greenish, off and on throughout the day.

He's being careful around the cats, and they are relaxing a bit.  Moose likes to follow him as if he needs a supervisor, though I think Bear already got the point - don't mess with the Moose cat.  Bear tried to climb up in the recliner and Moose immediately launched himself off the cat tree that's next to it and went after Bear.  Bear ran to get away, dropped flat on the floor, and was whimpering.  I tried to give Moose some Rescue Remedy to calm him down, but he wouldn't take it.  Bear is crated now while I'm at work, so it'll give everyone a chance to get used to each other in a safe manner.  The little cat Missy is so adaptable.  Moose is just being a PITA.  I do spend time with just the cats, so he'll settle in a few days, I'm sure.

Other than that, Bear is settling in.  My son came home from work the first night and Bear greeted him at the door without hesitating.  He's going to be a good dog!

Reading about how well Bear's settling into your home brings such a huge smile to my face.  It sounds like he's a big sweety and will fit well into your life, especially once Moose realizes he's not leaving [:)].  I'm also betting the cough is kennel cough and that shouldn't be too hard to clear up.  Can't wait to see some more pics of Bear.
