election day..should faramir/joel be banned?

I see where you're coming from Joyce and I almost agree with you.   Being banned forever does seem a bit harsh.  However, not being allowed to participate in an internet forum hardly equates to being in jail, does it?  Furthermore, a moderated forum has rules.  Other than banning, what can you do with someone who consistently violates the rules?  There are places you can go (USENET) if you want to play where there are no rules.
 
To me, it is unfortunate that someone has to be banned.  It is pretty simple to follow the rules, but if you do misstep, you get a good talking to and a chance to correct your behavior, followed, as I understand it, by another chance and then again by yet another chance.  IOW, it ain't easy to get banned from idog.
 
Unless things have changed since my days as a moderator, banning isn't terribly effective anyway, especially against a determined forum participant.  You can ban a specific IP address but IP addresses, for many people, change every time they access the internet.  You can ban by ISP, but that may catch more people than you want to ban, the forum equivalent of throwing the baby out with the bath water.  And then, we have anonymous proxy servers which, by logging on through them, will change or mask your IP address.  Or you can follow the rules.
 
I like Joel.  I appreciate his sick sense of humor.  Maybe he didn't contribute much to the forum but I posit that most of us take more from here than we leave.  The rules do not require us to contribute in order to play here.  Joel is not an idiot.  He knew very well what he was doing.  Unfortunate as it is, he was his own worst enemy.

That is exactly what I was trying to express. You can ban the person a dozen times and they can still come back. There are public computers, buy a new computer, use a spare. There are ways around it, thats why I think it's a waste of effort to ban someone.
What is the point of the block feature if no one uses it?
 
Jamie, I would not want your job, I'm sure your mail box is always full. I'm not saying that the board should not be moderated. I'm just saying it is impossible to keep someone away for good.

IMO seemingly impossible to enforce rules are part of life, at least my life...being a parent, lol. Doesn't mean that because they can be circumvented by devious means...they are less important or even that they don't matter at all, godallahbuddha forbid.
 
But again...that's just me.
 
Perhaps if eople would like to continue to discuss the rules pertaining to banning and such it can be moved to NDR? Just a small suggestion as this is definitely not a dog thread at this point. [] [sm=peace.gif]

I'm not at all saying that rules should be bent. Being a parent as well, rules are rules. I've done a very good job at enforcing rules in my house and my kids are some of the most respectful well manered children you could ever meet. 
 
I am not talking about the rules here. Sure they should be followed. I am only saying that there are ways around it. Is it right?   No, I'm not saying it is. It is just very easy for anyone to go around the rules of a forum.

You all do realize that he wanted (in no particular order) 1. attention and 2. all of us fighting amongst ourselves.  I wasn't even around for his original incarnation, but its obvious from this thread alone what he's into.

I am amused by Joels posts,but dont think i would bother to reply to his posts much if he was allowed to stay,because i would never be sure what his real stand on certain issues were.So what would be the point of responding,unless i was feeling like goofing off myself..which is very possible..lol

i still think he looks like this guy..lol



If Joel turns out to be this guy,i think he should be banned from the planet..

ok,so i went back and read this whole thread,including the 3 legged dog post..

if this is an indication of his way of arguing a point,or just showing his type of humor,then i am not quite sure what all the fuss is about.

I really like this place,and like the cyber people i have met here,but the posts i have seen of his are so far off the wall that i cannot believe anyone would think he is bieng truthfull..Some people have a gift for sucking people into  an argument and then watch them go round and round..Joel is one of these guys..i think its kind of funny..I rarely get sucked into these arguments,but if it happens i blow it off...after all,this isnt real life...what i do with my dogs is real life.and i only take opinions regarding my dogs from the people on here that i believe have some common sense.

Reminds me of Howard Stern...i loved his show,(the late night show from the 80's was a blast)even tho i know alot of the stuff he said wasnt what he believes or i believe,i still found it funny in a satirical kind of way.



if you cant laugh at these posts,i would just block them ...in the end tho it makes no difference to me whether he stays or goes...i am sure he will be back in some other incarnation.

I still can't figure out why he would want to come back. Knowing your unwanted and still hankering to come back.
The way I look at is, your banned, good-bye.. You had all the chances your going to get, if you still can't follow the rules, your out. I don't post much, but have been around for awhile. I have yet to see someone banned who didnt deserve it.

Well the only thing I can say is that Joel/faramir's posts have gotten enough attention that he could go back and read and re-read them for a few months and enjoy the attention that way. 

Yes he should be banned.  For how long?  Admin's discression. 

Other than that, this was a waste of a thread.
