Heartworm

    how much do they cost?

    has anyone used iverhart plus?

    or biospot?

Iverhart is sort of a generic HeartGuard.   BioSpot is NOT a good thing.  BioSpot is systemic - meaning it goes thru the skin and stays IN the body as a pesticide for a while.  But it's been linked to all sorts of bad reactions in dogs and frankly it's not cost effective because it doesn't last well at all.

a lot of people around here ive talked to dont use any kind of heartworm protection and their vets have never mentioned it either.  is it only needed in certain areas?

Where do you live Jaye?  I know that in CA I didn't use hw protection because the areas I lived in weren't high in incidents....however, I was always told that if I was going to travel to the foothills, to use it.

Most vets will have a chart in their office showing the states and regions where the danger is high enough to warrant the use of hw meds.  I'd ASK.

i live in western washington in the puget sound (seattle) area.  yeah ill ask the vet.

I was just wondering the same thing Jaye... I live in Snohomish., Wa and my Cooper is 4 months old.  He had his worm stuff at the first vet visit and she gave me stuff to give him around a week later and then he has gotten his shots, but haven't heard of this Interceptor until reading this board.  I too will be asking when he goes in for his last set of shots.  Maybe this isn't a high risk area, but will certainly be asking.

My boys both use Sentinel, as I wokr at a vet's and all employees received a free year's supply.  When their supplies run out, though, I'll likely switch to Interceptor, only because we just don't have fleas[:)]

i talked with the vet. western washington isnt really a risky area so mostly no one here uses heartworm protection.

Is there anything wrong w/ Heartguard Plus?

I am wondering the same thing as this is what I have Prince on currently.

"wrong with" - probably not.  It's just not the one with the least amount of potential side effects that does the most for your money. (And I'm sure THAT was as clear as mud!)

Meaning -- general consensus of opinion is that Interceptor kills more different kinds of parasites but is still safer. (Sentinel IS Interceptor with an egg inhibitor added to it)
