Feeding?

    Feeding?

So far we feed him two time's a day

It is recommended that you feed 3 times or more a day.

You will make your puppie sick if you try to feed everything he needs in 2 meals.  Puppies eat more than adults of the same weight because they are growing.  Also if a puppie goes to long without food, it will vomit.

So 3 or more small meals a day.  Another suggestion: follow the feeding instructions on the food especially with a large breed pup.  If you feed a large breed pup to much he will grow to fast and end up with joint issues.  This is why they make large breed pup formulas.

Agreed.  The pup needs 3 meals a day for now.  Sooner or later he'll start turning his nose up at "lunch" and then you can eliminate that feeding and use the food in the other two feedings.  But, for now, minimum of 3 times per day.

Yeah i thought so but NOOOOO! dad says two time's a day

So were gonna start three times a day.

Please explain to your dad that at this age, that little tummy just can't hold enough to properly nourish the pup in two feedings.  By trying to eat more than he can comfortably hold at one time the pup is going to poop  a whole lot more cuz he simply can't hold it....so that extra food is wasted because he isn't getting any benefit from it.  Splitting the daily ration into 3 feedings instead of two also helps keep the pup from having gawd awful discomfort from hunger between those 2 feedings and can also prevent vomiting bile because the tummy is too empty.

Think of it this way....for the first several weeks of his life he ate whenever he felt the need at momma's teat.  When I wean a foster litter they are fed FOUR times a day and then down to three about 3 months or so, and then down to two when they lack interest in the third meal.

You shouldn't feed MORE, it should just be split into 3 meals instead of 2.

While I'd like to see that second feeding closer to the first instead of 8 hours later, if that's the best you can do with your families schedule, it's certainly better than just twice a day.  I'd move that final feeding of the day up a bit....9 is pretty late to eat and still have a chance to do the bathroom think OUTSIDE instead of in the crate!

What I've done is fed them three times a day up until 6 months old, then switched it to twice a day. My schedule was something like this: Breakfast 8-9am, Lunch 12-1pm, Supper 6-7pm. Now they just get fed whenever I get up in the morning and supper is usually around 6:30. Oh yes, and the amount I've fed Mirelle (the current puppy) has always been 3 cups. At first it was 1 cup at each meal, and now it's 1 1/2 twice a day. I'm  not saying that's how much you should feed or anything, just that, like Glenda said, the food should be split into smaller meals.

Agreeing with Glenda that if you can't do much to change the first and second feeding times because of schedules, you still might want to consider feeding the third time just a bit earlier, even 1/2 hour, so you are sure to be able to potty him and he can have a bm before bed.  I recall Pofi at that age needing to potty 20 minutes to 1/2 hour after meals.

I think we moved Pofi from 3x a day to 2x somewhere around 9 months.  Seems like there are varied opinions on when to do this transition - 6 mos or 12 mos, I ended up splitting the difference. I took my cues from him. He was no longer gobbling his food up at 9 months and also was not growing at such a phenomonal rate any more.  Just seemed right.

Hmmm . . . we've been feeding winston 2 meals a day for at least a month now and he's only 5 months old.  He started to ignore is lunch at around 4 months.  I mean he'd eat it (more like nibble at it), but not with the same interest as his breakfast and dinner.  So we switched to two meals and he's been on that for a little while now.  I haven't noticed and ill effects so far . . . he poops 2-3x daily (once in the am when he gets out of his crate, once mid-day, and sometimes once more in the evening).  I've never seen him throw up anything either and he's gaining weight appropriately (roughly 2 lbs/week).

Is this going to lead to a long term problem with Winston?
