Both dogs are old enough to produce pups. I assume neither is spayed or neutered?
I'm not a breeder here, but I would suspect that the female dog would not have allowed the male to connect of she wasn't in season. Either way I think you have to assume it's possible if both are intact.

I don't know anything at all about breeding, but if you want to avoid the possibility of unwanted pups - and you're not planning on breeding her - it might be a good idea to get your lab spayed. Then you wouldn't have any worries about intact male dogs.

    my 5 yr old lab..
[sm=blush.gif] A personal question.... Why is she not spayed yet?

Some dogs will mount but not connect.  I don't really know the reasoning for this but it can happen with two dogs of any sex female on female or female mounting on male strange to us but it's normal doggy behavor.  Did they connect, a dog will usally not mate if the female is not in heat.  The first week of being in heat she may not have any spoting at all and after the spoting stops she could still be in heat for about a week after.  Either way, if she is not a show dog then I would strongly suggest getting her spayed as soon as you can.

Did they connect and get "stuck" together for a while? If not, then what you were seeing was normal dominance behavior.

And to reiterate, both dogs should be desexed. There are too many dogs being killed in shelters to create more.

Your bitch has a high risk of pyometra after every season, and that only goes up with age. The uterus of a dog deteriorates with every season.

Pyometra can be deadly if not caught and treated. Guess what the treatment is...spaying. So you can spay now while she is healthy, and not risk pyometra at all...or you can wait for her to get it then have her spayed when it's an emergency and she's already ill.

It would be MOST helpful if you would loose the internet slang and use actual words......

Hate to rain on anyone's parade, but, I have seen litters conceived without a physical tie. Dogs do not always HAVE to tie for a mating to take place and you are deluding yourself badly if you think you are "safe".

As for not turning pups over to a shelter, perhaps you wouldn't.  But what about those pups already IN the shelter waiting for homes??  Your pups, of mixed heritage, will take the home that could have gone to one of those little ones waiting on death row.

NP Jolene, it's a serious thing. Basically about 1-2 weeks after a season a bitch may seem depressed or lethargic, run a temperature, drink a lot and go off her feed. If the Pyometra (which basically is a uterus filled with pus in medical terms)...is "open" she will leak brownish yucky liquid that smells really bad. If it is "closed" you may get no signs at all until it ruptures which can kill the bitch. Both types are extremely serious and can kill within DAYS.

The general view of the vet community is that it WILL occur with age in all unspayed bitches. This is why even breeders like myself, spay their bitches that are no longer being used in a programme....even if she is 5-8 years old. We want them around a good long time [;)]

No one is "dissing" you for the way you type.  It's just that this is not a board whose members usually use internet slang, and some members find it difficult to follow.  Perhaps you find grammatical English hard to follow, otherwise, why would you have a problem being sensitive to others' desire to read your posts?
At any rate, Glenda is 100% correct that it isn't about whether you wouldn't dump the pups.  The problem is one of sheer numbers.  For every pup born in a backyard mating, another one in a shelter may not get a home.
It is irresponsible to keep a pet unspayed for five whole years, unless there is a medical risk to her health from surgery or anesthesia.  And, just because you have never had a problem before does not mean you don't have one now.
