    Aw Man... Moral Dilemma

Ok, my grandmother asked me to join another pet forum she found.  She told me how great it was etc. so I was like "sure, I'll join up when I get home!"  but when I got home and went to the URL, I found that it wasn't JUST a forum.  On the main page there is a LARGE classified section, allowing ANYBODY to sell their animals.  Just like in the newspaper.

I am so disappointed, because I wanted to join that forum, but I just can't now after seeing that.  I TOLD her to join this one and a few others I know to be good but that must've gone completely over her head or something.

It's frustrating too, because I enjoy helping people whenever possible, but I don't want to support a place that allows the mass selling of animals.  >-.-<

Hmm, that's a tough one. I don't think I'd join a forum like that. Have you explained your reasons to her about not wanting to join that forum? Has she seen this one? I think if she spent anytime on this forum, she'd want to join immediately! [:)]

This one was the first forum I referred her to... but alas... >9.9< I'm going to end up having to explain to her why I won't join that one, and she's probably going to get mad at me because she's not against puppies etc. being sold in classified ads to highest bidder... She's completely oblivious of why I believe it's wrong, even though I have explained to her before. >9.9< Oh well...

I completely agree with you- I wouldn't be able to join a forum which allowed the mass selling of pets... I would try to convince your grandmother to join this forum as well... if she loves the other forum so much, she can continue to post on there, but post on this one as well.

Aren't we sending a mixed message here??? If somebody needs to rehome their pets for whatever reason, you encourage them to ask an adoption fee to insure the seriousness and care a new owner would hope to provide.  In a way, that is selling, although I understand that there is a semantical difference here, but to the public at large-they might not see a difference between what is recommended regularly here and what is going on in the other websites and forums.   And in the long run....we would hope that all animals, regardless of careless owners and unfortunate and unplanned breeding, do find their way into forever homes.  Maybe we should join such a forum just to have the opportunity to express our alternative views to people who might not otherwise be exposed to them.   Just a thought

Yes but as much as I want to give my alternative views there, by joining that forum I would be supporting a website that allows BYBs and puppy/kitten mills to sell their puppies/kittens on the classified ads (at no charge to them). Like I said it is a moral dilemma. >-.-< And for people reading this who can't tell the difference between adoption/reputable breeders and the mass selling of pets on classified ads, here it is:

Reputable breeders do not NEED to advertise their puppies/kittens in the newspaper. They usually have the homes lined up BEFORE they are even born. They sell them for a fee, and with a legally binding contract. They have the parents tested for every health problem imaginable before breeding. They screen every potential home. Rescues and shelters require an adoption fee to help keep their organization running and to help pay vet bills etc. For most of them you also have to sign a contract and answer a lot of questions to determine whether or not you'd make a suitable owner.

Most of the puppies and kittens in the classifieds are from BYBs (backyard breeders), who are selling for profit, and who toss them upon anyone who has a buck. They don't have them health tested either. They pretty much are just in it for the money, and they breed them over and over... >-.-<
