Kota also had an infection that had to be treated.  But I noticed it because he licked himself a lot more than normal.  And the pus/smegma/stuff was a greenish color...  so he had a trip to the vet and have never had a problem since!  And that was when he was about 5-7 months old.  He's 7 years now.

he is grabbing around my arm more than normal.

When a dog wraps it's front legs around something (like a toy or a puppy or your arm) and holds it against his sternum (or what would be your sternum, I don't know what they call it on a dog) there is a physiological response that causes the dog to start humping. Odd but true.

I also have a theory about the "red rocket". The sheath on the penis of some dogs is longer, or covers the penis better than on some other dogs. These dogs seem to show the rocket much less. I would guess that they dogs who have the sheath that barely covers the whole penis are more easily excited due to the exposure. I have never heard or read this theory but it proves true on my own dogs.

Seeing JJ's "red rocket" or "lipstick" as we also call it in my house is a daily occurance and he is a 7 year old! He never tries to hump anything it just seems to happen when he really needs to go out and go pee pee and is excited that I got home to take him out. Otherwise, if he doesn't have to potty he doesn't seem to do it.

Xerxes. . . a female!! How exciting for you!! Another pharoah hound? A mate for Xerxes. . . a different type of sighthound. . . what is she going to be??

lol.  I have an older male so poor thing, so I don't get too many displays from him.  However, I ended up keeping a stray for a while and the poor thing was so happy to see someone kind with food, that he would display his joy in full blast. [;)]  When I finally was able to take him to the vet, he verified some of the discharge was semen, but he also had an infection which we were able to treat.  This poor dog, had probably never been touched, you would scratch his ear a little, and the rocket would tried to take off... hehehehe.

I found him a good home, but I still get the full display whenever he sees me. [:)]  The first time, his new mom saw it, she screamed.  I thought it was funny.

yes perfectly normal [:D]..i have only had 1 female dog the rest have been males,so as you could imagine, ive seen my share of "red rockets" lmao

A lot of times some discharge in male dogs is perfectly normal, especially if they are not neutered.

    Neutering should reduce this greatly.

Bunni, what you said makes a lot of sense.  I don't remember Max ever having his *red rocket* on display and he has to be about 2-1/2.

Thanks again!  I haven't seen this since, but he has been trying to grap onto my arm after playing hard for awhile.  Ah, the joys of boys!  lol
