The San Diego zoo is really amazing.  You won't be able to see it all in one day.  I grew up there, and to me that's what a zoo was supposed to be.  It  wasn't until we moved to Davis and I went on a pre-school field trip to the Sacramento zoo that I ever saw animals in cages. If you're going to be on the coast though, be prepared for *summer fog* - it's not like the valley where the fog is pretty much a Jan./Feb. thing.  You can be on the beach for a couple of weeks and only see the sun for about an hour a day when the fog rolls out around 3:00 p.m. and rolls back in by 4:00.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for good weather for you.

I still remember Point Lobos (near Monterey) as one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. And the first place I ever saw sea otters. [:D]

Stop and take the Skunk Train! It's a steam locomotive that goes through the redwoods. It's SUCH a kick! I love it! Of course, I love old trains, but the scenery is great!

Ok I'll agree with Cathy....Sonoma/Napa are gorgous I've been many times with my family and I would love to live there.

Also Monterey and Carmel are also great I've been there a few times and I loved it, there is so much to see and the weather is always great there too!

Some places taht we went on the trip up the 1 from LA to San Francisco.
    Winchester Mystery House
    Hearst Castle(well, I haven't gone in yet)
A beach with Elephant Seals near Hearst Castle(very specific, I know)
    17 Mile Drive(Pebble Beach)
An Orchid Farm that I can't remember the name of but was just on the side of the highway
    Fisherman's Wharf
I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones that come to mind right now.  We took the 1 up through Big Sur(Dramamine time!) and the 101 for a small section down south, I cant remember where.  I definitely like the 1 better!  The trip seems to go much faster when there are things to look at.
