My favorite is the kenmore progressive canister. I bought this for my mom...it's $399 when it's on sale. It got a bag (bagless sucks if you have pets, unless it's a dyson) It's very easy to use and versatile. It has a stair grip (to lock on the stairs) with a power mate attachment to clean your stairs and in the car, couch too. The wand extends to like, 5 feet and disconnects at the power head and at the top to use handheld. It's very easy to clean the ceilings. The hose is about 9 feet long. It does carpet and bare floors, and has suction control.

I have this vacuum and love it.  I have two Eskies that leave lots of hair and this vacuum does the trick and never clogs!!!

I have a Kirby...grew up with them and honestly have not found one out there I like better.  The Eureka Boss is a CR best buy.  Vaccum repair shops I talked to told me to stick with my Kirby if I didn't mind the price tag.  I bought a new one last year...The Ultimate G series.  It even has a "transmission"  I have never found a vaccum that out cleans it.  They are not light and not in everyone's budget but they do a great job!

We went from a Kirby to a Rainbow. I honestly wish I had the Kirby back.

I would say the Dyson Animal lives up to its promotions.  My husband works at Lowes, and we had a chance to buy one of the floor models on sale. Unfortanetly we had to buy a new dishwasher instead of the Dyson. [:(] My parents got it though, even though my Dad didn't think it was worth the cost.  Let me just say he and my brother both get it out and clean the house now! LOL I died laughing at their conversion.  I have borrowed it a time or too, and it really does clean up the pet hair and dead skin cells (I sucked all the crap out of our mattress and couch YUCK!!!!). We had bought an Oreck at a auction, and I have to say it does a very good job (the Dyson didn't have much to find after I cleaned with the Oreck), though I would rather have the Dyson. The bagless and the suction power of the hose attachments are nicer than the Oreck for me.

The only complaint I had was the hose was a little difficult to use because it twisted.  The fact that it allowed me to reach all those usual unreachable places and clean up all the dust and dander and pet hair though was worth the hassle. Weight wasn't really a problem, but I grew up with an old Kenmore canister and the old Kirby self-propelled.
