    Anyone know anything about hair?

I recently got my hair cut, really short.  I trust my stylist and he always makes my hair look awesome.  This time I am not so fond of it.  First of all, it is shorter than I have ever had it.  I actually really like the style.  I think what I don't like is the way he textured it.  I think it looks dead on the ends.  In the past he has cut the texture in by cutting what looks like little triangles into my ends.  This time he used these scissors that looked like a comb sort of b/c it had teeth.  I don't have much hair left to spare but I am seriously considering going back and having him retexture the ends the way he normally does.  Does anyone know enough about hair to know if one or the other way of texturing would cause this or if I am just way off?

I have never gone back to someone b/c I didn't like the way they made my hair look so this is a totally new concept to me.  I really think I should give him the chance to fix it instead of going to someone else.  I didn't even realize how much it was bothering me until I had a dream about it the other night and realized I really want it changed.  I don't even know what to say to him.....

I think what you're talking about is texturing shears. I've had those scissors used on me before, they've used them up top to give some height. It cuts the hair at different lengths. I've never had the courage to go back when I've had a bad haircut, I just switch stylists. But if you really like this person, I think I'd go back. My SIL has her own salon and she's said before she wants people to be happy with their hair more than anything, because if they're not, they just tend to (like I do!) go off and then complain about the cut, which gives her business bad word-of-mouth. She's said she'd much rather have people come back and give her stylists a chance to make them happy. So . . . do as my SIL says, not as I do!

Try asking him to razor the ends of your hair. That should take the dead look away, and it gives a nice triangular cut to it that isn't overly done. You can also use some product to add some texture, like texturizing wax, which I think can be found in every salon.
I use a lot of different product on my hair, depending on my mood. Some days, the texture that you can't really notice when it has nothing in it stands out more depending on what product I use. So this might be good for you, if you're worried about him not being able to fix it to your liking.

blah, they are thinning sheers, they are used to thin out really thick hair by cutting some peices and missing others. i'm guessing he was trying to make your ends look kind of feathery, and you ended up with what looks like split ends. only way to fix that would be to cut off the ends and start with a straight edge. this is why i am the only one that comes at my head with pointy objects, my mom went to cosmetology school and will cut mine for free and i still don't go there.

Oh, I once had a hairdresser use texturizing shears on my hair and I loved it! Never got that great of a haircut again. It takes all kinds I guess. [:)]  I wouldn't go for the razoring, IMO that increases the 'split' look to the ends. What I would do if I were you is let it grow for 4-6 weeks. Deep condition the ends of your hair to see if that helps. You may want to go easy on the heat treatments by letting your hair mostly air-dry and then just giving it a quick blast w a hairdryer to fluff/style it. Go back to your hairdresser and tell him you weren't fond of the texturizing shears he used last time. I'm sure he can still do a great job, this just wasn't to your taste.

Oh geez, it sounds like he used thinning shears..  I suspect there is not much you can do on your own to fix it.  You should definitely go back to him!!  absolutely, positively - go back and just tell him you've tried to live with it for a few days and it's just not working.  He'll be happy that you gave him a chance to fix it.

btw - this is exactly why I cut my own hair!!!!

It was definately texturing sheers he used and I even asked him when he was doing it if it would make my hair look dead on the ends b/c I sort of remembered that happening before.  It is mostly just at the bottom that it looks dead.  I have dry frizzy hair so I don't need anything to make it look any worse.  It seems to look OK everywhere else, not as good as it usually does, but OK if I use a lot of product to basically make it oily and weigh it down, although it never looks or feels oily, it is just moisturized on the ends..  My hair always looks its best when it is really dirty and I haven't washed it for 3 days!  I never blow dry but I always use a straightening iron every few days when I wash it.

I think I will go back and ask him to clean up the bottom a little at least.  He really is an awesome hairstylist and I have no intentions of leaving him...although it takes him about 2-3 hours from start to finish everytime I go there which makes it really hard to go very often.

Thanks for the advice.  I might try product for a little longer to let it grow out just a little more and then go back.  My aunt works there and I will see her this weekend so I think I will also ask her what she thinks.

Sorry, wish I could help ya.  I shave my head and then polish it to a high sheen.[:D]

Blergh, I hate the thinning sheers. I have ridulously, freakishly thick hair. Like, about three times a year I see another woman who I think, "Okay, now she has hair like me." And it seems like every time I go to a new stylist the first thing they want to do is attack me with the thinning sheers so they can deal with my mop, er hair. And I have to do my very best "LEAVE IT!" as if Marlowe were gunning straight for a 4 day old squirrel carcass in order to get them to back the heck off.

I always tell a new stylist: I don't own a blowdryer. I'm lazy. Whatever you do to me, it has to be maintanable by washing and brushing. I've only had one stylist ever that actually took that information and did something really awesome for me.
