Does anyone suffer from vertigo?

    Does anyone suffer from vertigo?

My daughter has been on meds for it.  She had a rough couple of days, and went to the doc today.  He ordered a CT scan to rule out an aneurism or something, so now I'm a worried Mom.

I don't, but my dad did and my boss does.  It can be caused by so many things Marty.  I can understand your worries, but hopefully the CT scan will show all is okay.  They did every test in the book on my dad and never really were able to determine the cause.  I know he took Meclazine (sp?) for it when it was really bad.  I'll be thinking good thoughts that they're able to figure out what it is with your daughter and it's nothing serious.

Doc did say that most of the time it occurs with a virus.  The meds were helping, but not this time.  It is flu and cold season, and she is a teacher.

I was wondering if the tendency would be genetic, but there is no family history of it as far as I know.

Since I've had a lot of problems with mine my first thought goes to the ears - the inner ear is our source of balance. Have they looked into possible ear infection?

I had a good friend and my eldest brother battled this for awhile. Went through all the tests and meds, etc., and the same thing as was said before, it was most likely a virus and it resolved  itself, but after several months. I know how disruptive it was for them and how miserable they were. I wish your daughter a speedy recovery!

I worked with someone who would get it when she got sick and it would usually lay her up for a few days.  She could barely get out of bed when it happened.

I did some research when my dad was having problems and for the type he had, the thought was that it had to do with the tiny hairs deep in the ear canal.  They had a term for it, but I can't remember what it was now.

I think it's good that they're taking it seriously with your daughter and ruling out anything major.  They did a CT scan on my dad also, but everything was fine.  I hope the same is true for your daughter.

Some meds give me vertigo, my sons both did it to me in the first six weeks of pregnancy (lol), I had a really bad bout after my accident, and now I get very mild vertigo associated with migraines (I'm having some right now - had to cut short a shopping trip for it).

It's horrendous. If it persists even if they can't find a medical reason, make sure they look into vestibular exercises. Doing these is what fixed the vertigo I had after the accident. I had a slight injury to my inner ear apparently, at first, but that healed quickly. The brain, however, was still out of whack and the exercises fixed that.

You think of vertigo as things spinnng but it's not that. You get this sense that things aren't "right" and you have to very exremely careful. Like the floor is not at the right height - there are unfamiliar and moving bumps and curves in it. If you put your hand out or turn your head wrong you might tip over, even if you are sitting down. If you move too fast you might not bring all of you, with you. Talking on the telephone is a chore because you lose track of your eyes and get sick from their tracking around randomly. And of course constant nausea because it's like being on a really brutal rollercoaster ride that was advertised as an "A" ride - only you are the only one feeling it! And people aren't very sympathetic because vertigo is just being a little dizzy, right?

I used to take balance for granted but not anymore! Best wishes for your daughter's recovery.

Thanks for the replies.  I remember when she was about 4 or 5 (she is now 35), she had a ruptured ear drum.  Didn't complain of pain...trying to remember, but I think I saw a bit of blood on her pillow one morning and got her in to see her pediatrician.  He was surprised at her not complaining of pain.  I wonder if that might have something to do with this.

I get vertigo also.  Most often after I have flown especially if I have had drainage.  I suffer from constant allergies and almost always have some drainage.  It is also associated with a virus from what I am told.  Mine is not terrible but enough to make me motion sick which I typically am not.  It makes me feel like I am walking on a really rocky boat.  My Dr always gives me some really strong antihistamines and that always clears it up pretty fast.

EDA: For me it is always inner ear and my brother was the one with ear problems growing up.  I am not sure I have ever even had an ear infection ..(knocking on wood now!)

Marty - look "labyrinthitis"...I think that's the correct spelling.  My boss said he was actually diagnosed with this for his vertigo and I'm betting it's what my dad had also.  It might help your daughter to do as much research as she can, so she can ask questions.

My DH had ;problems with vertigo a few years back.  It resolved eventually and he has had no further problems but did have it for a couple of months.  Doctor believes it was due to a virus also.

Probably more than you need but gives you an idea of all the types of "dizzyness" problems at there.
