Vegetarians

Solgar was just sold, so watch your vitamins, girls. They might change.

My iron is always great. I weigh 115 pounds. To give blood, you have to be 110. I'm always fine to give blood, if they can get the big needle in my vein. Apparently, it's tricky. It's also great fun for everyone in the blood mobile to give it a go.

    Iron supplements make me sick.

I cook in cast iron, all the time. I eat plenty of leafy greens. Apparently, this is enough for me.

I need to cook Indian more. More precisely, I need to have Raj cook Indian more, only he moved away, so I don't eat it so often, now.

Oh no! Solgar just sold?! well that kinda sucks, they've been around forever! I hope they don't change their formula. Maybe I should go buy a few bottles and stock up. [:(]

Can someone post or link to the Solgar ingredient list (the old one that everyone has been using) so if I see a new bottle I'll know.

    Thanks.

I've decided to get the vitamin and the b complex and wait on the iron until after the blood work.

I'm going to go and get some groceries that were suggested here.  I actually can't stop thinking about hummus since it was mentioned!

PS---Are you all taking the Female Mutiple tablets or Daily Gold Pack for Men/Women??  Which do you think??

They sold a few years ago, to a small company, which immediately sold out to the Centrum people. Centrum has learned all it wants from Solgar's resources, and is selling the company, again. We don't carry them anymore, where I work, which is a shame, b/c they were so good. We just don't know what's going to happen, with them....

    Hummus does sound really good!

OK, come on over with the dogs and all us girls will have a chip and hummus party!  Willow loves it too!

Should I not get this brand at all then??  Confused. . .

I was vegetarian for a long time, took a break, and was again for another ten years. But I developed some pretty hard-core insulin resistance. I couldn't lose weight (it wasn't thyroid, either), and I was really having blood sugar problems. My joints hurt, the asthma was bad, I couldn't seem to get enough protein, I had terrible acid reflux, it wasn't a good thing.

When I divorced my ex, who was a vegetarian, I did a modified, common sense Atkins: very low carb, high protein, lots and lots of greens and veggies.

ALL my problems went away, including holding onto weight when I went on that diet. I'm much healthier eating a high protein, lower carb diet. But for a long time the vegetarian thing was fine. As I got older though, it didn't work for me anymore. So watch out for that insulin resistance thing. Lots of carbs can do a real number on your system.

Everyone is different, and even everyone has changing dietary needs.

When I was around 45 I got anemic. My doc said I had menstruated out all the iron in my system over the years, and I'd have to build up some more reserves in my liver. When I was younger I had a very good hematacrit. Now I have to watch out that I get enough iron.

I'm vegetarian and I eat beans, whole grains, and some dairy for protein. I take a multivitamin (Just this week I started multivitamins becuase I can now swallow them! I couldn't before...lol)

I'm 38 and have been a vegetarian for 22 years now. For protein I eat a lot of dried beans. Kidney and black beans in vegetarian chili, pinto or black beans in burritos, white beans with cornbread made from stoneground cornmeal, hummus with whole wheat pita bread.I love edamame soybeans, you just boil them in the pod and pop them out for a snack. There good in vegetable soup too.Garbanzo beans are good with a lot of things too, like whole grain pasta and veggies cooked in olive oil. Dried beans have a good amount of iron too, alot of them have 25% of your daily requirement in one serving, lentils more than that I think.I also get protein from nuts.My favorite easy lunch is natural peanut butter on whole wheat bread with sliced strawberries on top. I snack on raw almonds, walnuts, pecans.I try to use whole grain bread from the store, I also make my own and put a lot of variety in it, using different whole grains, and seeds like sesame, sunflower, etc.I also boil a large pot of wheatberries every couple weeks and freeze portion sized containers. One of my favorite recipes with them is to dice and carmelize an onion in olive oil, add a diced carrot, sometimes a little red pepper, salt and cracked pepper to taste, throw in some cooked wheatberries til heated through, dress with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
One of the best cookbooks out there for vegetarians is Deborah Madison's Vegetarian Cooking For Everyone.

Thank you for that book suggestion.  I'll look into getting that at Border's today.

I'm also going to go get some B complex and a good multi-vitamin.  And, later I'm going to place an order with the grocery store for some good foods that I can eat and I think I'm going to start a diet too while I'm at it.  For some reason, I'm motivated right now.

Anyway, please keep any suggestions coming.  I know this will be a work in progress.  But, I've got Willow all set and now it's time to work on her mom.

    Thanks!

You know what? I don't think you need to "'start a diet"....
If you start "eatting better" as a vegetarian, like very few simple carbs, many more veggies fruits and whole grains, you're gonna feel and look better as well as the side aspect of losing weight. Look at your dietary changes as just making some good changes to make you feel better and be healthier. If you think of it as a diet you'll think that you need ot restrict yourself. Make sure you eat a little of what you crave or these changes will be much harder to keep. Everyone's given you a ton of great suggestions. Have fun shopping! Summer is an awesome time for fresh stuff :)

True, true it should be a lifestyle.  But, my problem is I'm a bread and cheese addict.  I eat way too much of that stuff which keeps weight on me.  I don't eat a lot just the wrong things.  So, I've got to restrict myself some.  I also like cookies and candy just fine.  But, I understand what your saying completely.

    THANKS!
