Discovering the Inner Wolf

Teenie broke a tooth on a nylabone, but we haven't had any problems with real, raw bones. Teenie's teeth also cleaned up significantly, but... she still needed a dental. She now gets raw bones for maintenance.

Yeah, Nigel has broken 2 teeth on nylabones, both molars and he had to have them extracted they were that broken, so I'm pretty careful about what he gets to chew on now-a-days.  That's why I'm a bit nervous about the RMB's, but very interested in them.

Eevee gets 2-3 of these per week and her teeth are "spectacular" according to the vet.  She broke a molar on a processed pet store bone about 6 months ago and it had to be extracted and it cost a pretty penny (but it was worth every cent because I got to meet Dr. Fitzgerald!! >O_O<;).

So yeah... I've pretty much replaced brushing with chewing these bones and that did it.

ok, so this is something I'm not sure if I've ever seen mentioned.  That bone that Sierra is eating/chewing on, does she actually EAT the bone?  Like break it off and swallow the bone?  If not, how do you get it away from her?

My dogs don't really resource guard toys or anything else, but I've never given them raw before and I could definitely see this as something that they would do that with.....

depends on the bone.  The MARROW bones they won't actually be able to eat, but I know Sheba chips away at the bone to get to more marrow.

so if I wanted to get bones to assist with teeth cleaning, what kind should I get?
    • Gold Top Dog
The one that she's chewing on in the photos.. no, she can't chew and eat. It's too thick, even for Sierras teeth. She does love to work on getting all the marrow out, and in the process she will (once in a while) break off tiny bits from one end. She doesn't eat those chipped pieces though.

When I first give her a new bone, I only give it to her for a few 15 minute intervals throughout the day, just to be sure her stomach is OK with it. Getting it away from her isn't a problem... just walk up and take it! I'll always give her a liver treat in return though.

The bone that Sierra's chewing on is part of a cow's leg. Raw, of course.

    Emma eats them.

Most dogs aren't as crazy food driven as she is, I hear.

Are raw chicken bones good for the dogs teeth?
    • Gold Top Dog
Yep! Just make sure the raw chicken's still attached:)

Sierra obviously loved it!  .. she's a lucky doggy, in more than one way.  My kids cannot have a RMB (or anything raw, for that matter) in the house.  YUCK.  Outside they go, and I lock the doggie door.  They don't usually notice that last bit for at least a half hour, though! [8|]

Sierra is such a cutie and she looks great (teeth and all!)
