    Any ideas? spider ID (Callie)

No picture -- no time.  We were in a black car, at night, lit by the white dome light.  David opened the back door to put a few groceries in the back and right almost in the doorway was a large web (it was spinning the web -- probably a foot in diameter) --

RED spider.  Bright orangey red -- no black or white markings on it.  Spider was about as big as a quarter - 50 cent piece.  I saw it as I turned around as David said "WHOA ... see this?  Bright red spider!!"

We were not in a safe area so he didn't linger.  He lifted it down by putting a magazine under it and blew it off when he got to the grass.

I've never seen anything like it -- Pretty delicate -- but the body was probably as big as the tip of my little finger (not as huge as some Florida spiders).

I mean a few days before Halloween?  I'm honestly not kidding.  We get brown recluse, we get black widows all the time here (even in the house).  But our first thot was perhaps it was something blown north from Sandy (storm).

DAvid's the only one that got the good look -- he said it was orangey red (which is what I saw -- sort of between tangerine and tomato red) -- couldn't have been better conditions to see color (black car, dark night and WHITE dome light)

I am about spiders as Glenda is about snakes (actually I'm that way about snakes too), so I"m glad it was him and not me.

Anybody got any ideas.  I did some looking on Google and didn't see anything that really looked accurate.  But the danged thing was definitely ALIVE.  LOL  phew.

Use Goggle, put in:  florida spider red

Callie, I am not big on spiders. I made the mistake of testing my search terms above and oh gosh now I'm gonna have nightmares for a week!

There were 2, the Orb Weaver which comes out at night and quickly spins a web, normally in the tree canopy, and one other (I was trying to quickly close the tab with all the photos)

No need to use a capital "F" on florida, Google is great that way!

I did the Google thing before I posted -- and I didn't try to restrict it to Florida because with the winds we've had it could have come from elsewhere easily.

About the only thing that even begins to make sense is a brown recluse -- it would have been one heck of a whomping BIG recluse, but I'm thinking that by the time the yellow/white dome light showed THRU it that it made it look more red than it was.  Looking at this link:

    http://rodneysouthern.hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Identify-Poisonous-Spiders

the recluse with the yellow background looks more orange than black.

They are the one spider that scares the spit out of me.  I've been bitten twice - PAINFUL -- you almost instantly feel like that whole part of your body stiffens up (I got bitten on the neck from ducking my clothesline out back of the house).  But in some people it can cause almost an instant heart attack (one of my boss's clients died from a recluse bite) and if you don't react that way, the venom is necrotic -- literally it just kills tissue and in a couple of days time you can have this big 'crater' around the bite --- you HAVE to go get antibiotics for it because it never just goes away.

I know some folks like Gina and Karen and Jackie others are darned good at etymology.

I love Spiders, really I do. The crab spider being one of my favs, but they are pretty small. My first thought was an orange cat face spider, you see them more in the fall. They come in a few colors. They are rather large. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araneus_gemmoides Maybe a Marbled Orb Weaver or Tropical Orb Weaver. They can be orange and rather large to. Although I am not sure they are found in Florida. http://mobugs.blogspot.com/2010/10/marbled-orb-weaver.html

the Sowbug killer is almost right except that has a yellow/cream colored lower body that's really big and this one didn't have an obvious or huge lower segment.

Who the heck knew there were so many spiders!!

Where is Peter Parker when I need him?

PawMaid thanks to you as well -- David and I could see this from opposite sides (I was behind the web he was in front of it).  it just didn't have that large lower segment of the Orb Weaver.

The Cat-Faced one?  That's a cool looking spider for a spider (*sigh*) but again this was really pretty delicate and slender compared to that one.  longer legs & tiny body.

It makes my heart clench to think it was probably a brown recluse with the light shining thru it that made the color more intense-- I don't even want to think of my husband's hands being that close to one of them.  For me they are a royal pain and make me sick, but the potential heart attack scares me.

Sow bug doesn't weave webs in the open according to the info in Karen's link.  I agree it was probably one of the orb weavers. Those are one of my favorite spiders. :)  I like spiders too as long as they are outside and not venomous.  The brown recluse is very reclusive (lol)  and they don't make webs out in the open.  I doubt it was one of those.

I have them all over the place Jackie -- Inside/outside, laundry room -- in fact I've got both those and black widows all over the place (gotta love those jealousy windows I've got *sigh*)

This web wasn't in the "open".  It was in the car (black car and it was dark) -- I'm just glad it was attached from the front to back seat rather than being connected to the door -- it likely would just have dropped to the floor when the door opened in that case.

Recluses LOVE quiet corners -- places like inside my laundry building, under overhangs, and in vegetation (and there are hedges all around the house/yard/fence and this car sits about a foot from the hedge).  It was even in a part of the car where it would be disturbed less -- not back where the wheelchair goes in and out, nor up front where we were sitting.  It was even on the other side of the car from where David stores my cushion.  They do a darned good job of hiding -- the love "under" things (which is how I've gotten nailed both times I've been bitting -- under the clothesline between a couple of shirts that I ducked -- shady even during the day but they get caught in my hair.

David's always checking with me because we get both those and black widows in the house and he never sees the red twinkle on the black widows (and he's actually a bit afraid of those)

I'm less freakish about spiders than I am snakes.  Even having a "basement" up north where spiders used to like to hang out - I've never seen lots of spiders until I moved down here.  sheesh.

As "ewwww" as the big hunter or wolf spiders are that can be massive, it's the littler ones like the recluse and the black widow that are more dangerous.  And because the recluse is normally brown it blends into almost anything.  Not at all easy to see.

That was why I wondered if anyone had any brilliant thoughts -- this thing was picture perfect.  Such a pretty red on that web.  Had we been parked anywhere but where we were, we'd have both had the phones out taking pictures, but this was NOT a good place *sigh* so we wanted outa there.

I misunderstood where the web was and thought it was on a door to the house or garage. I've no clue what it could be.  Maybe you or David will see it again and can get a picture when it's not such scary close quarters.

*eyebrow raised* Jackie, I will leave that to you (*smile*) -- I'd rather my 'dates' be with my husband sans spiders.  Close quarters are FINE as long as it's with husband not spider (of any variety).  I love critturs ... erm ... 'cept for spiders and snakes (old Jim Stafford song running thru my  head "I don't like spiders and snakes";) LOL

However, we ARE beginning to get David interested.  He was a bit more forthcoming tonight about what he saw from the "front" -- and he thot it looked very crab-like except they don't web-spin.

If I get any further cues or clues I'll letcha know.  Dang, I hate an unsolved mystery LOL
