Do you ever . . . . Deb W.

If DH asked, I probably would, if its something I know how to make.  But I can't really think of a time this has happened.  I would imagine if he really wanted it he'd make it himself, or get it out some place.

And Callie, DH and I are both w/ you on the asparagus thing.  Never liked it as a kid, tried it again last year thinking maybe it would be good.  Blech!  DH agreed and we threw it all out.

DH never liked asparagus until I started roasting it with garlic and olive oil and now he loves it. Many times it's overcooked and mushy and I can easily see how people wouldn't like it.

I don't know why the name "sauerbraten" didn't click but I had that at really nice chalet in the Black Forest and it was amazing. We thought it was a delicacy. I don't know why I've never tried to make it myself.

I like asparagus steamed gently and preferably with cheese sauce. My son introduced me to grilled asparagus done on the BBQ and I like it even better that way.

My ex-dh used to make sauerbraten and I honestly hated it. I didn't like the odor of the vinegar as it cooked and was even less fond of the flavor once done.

I'm not real big on meat, especially red meat, especially if I had to handle it or see it while it was raw.  That's why with the exception of steaks that DS #2 loves, all meat purchased is already cooked and frozen or ready to eat ... chicken fajita strips or a whole roasted chicken from Costco, meatballs from Trader Joe's, meatloaf from the Safeway deli, etc.

When DS #2 was young he LOVED liver and onions with brussel sprouts for the veggie.  And he always wanted me to buy fresh sprouts because his older brother hated those somewhat less than the frozen ones.  Still makes me shudder to think of how many times I cooked and ate that meal........

Thankfully, now he can't stand the idea of it!

Well, I'm fortunate that DH fancies himself a chef, so I don't have to do too much food preparation.  However, I'm like Joyce with the meat thing.  If it weren't for my picky palate (I hate legumes, eggs, beans, and other non-meat sources of high protein), I'd be a vegetarian.  Between thinking of where the meat came from and the horribleness of handling it raw, I hate preparing it.  Last week I was making a "healthy" recipe with chicken thighs, so I was removing the skin.  The act of tearing that off was turning my stomach.  It feels so barbaric.  And the red "blood" that comes out of raw beef  . . .  ugh!

On a more appetizing note, I always hated asparagus, spinach, and brussel sprouts.  But then I learned that it was because I'd only ever had them out of can or overcooked and mushy.  Asparagus roasted with olive oil and garlic is delicious, as is fresh spinach sauteed with garlic.  Brussel sprouts are great roasted with some olive oil and balsamic vinegar, or shredded and sauteed in butter, lemon juice and tossed with poppy seeds.

But the topic was food that grosses you out . . . sorry!

I catch my own bait with a bait casting net (shrimp, mullet, little perch), I catch the fish, I clean the fish and I fry the fish for hubby, but i don't eat it.  I use to do about 3/4 of all i caught--be it speckled trout, redfish, flounder, mackeral--for dogs and cat (baked in microwave or boiled in a tad of water).  I love shrimp, but fish, yuk.

i love beef liver, hubby gags at the thought, so i will often fix some for me while he is on the road.

I hear ya, Tracy! I'm a vegetarian but I cook meat for my family. Frozen chicken nuggets and fish filets are easy, but raw chicken and beef... ew. I only do boneless, skinless chicken breasts because I have no idea how to do anything else!

DH has tuna occasionally, but he knows the smell makes me sick, so he pretty much only makes that when I'm not home. Smile

Well, I dont know how I missed  this thread but it is very interesting how different we all are with regard to food :)  I love most everything.  I dont like to eat liver but really dont mind the smell.   I think Ron and I are about equal in our food prep.  We both like to try new and different  recipes although he didnt used to be that way.   I guess the only thing he likes that I am not real crazy about is Cilantro.  I dont mind it but he often over uses it and it is a smell that is almost too much for me.

The significant other is picky and a simple eater, but he knows I won't make him a sandwich because he likes mustard on his.  I can't stand mustard.

my ethnic background is German and trust me, if there is a way to take a really cheap cut of meat and make it tender and serve a LOT of people my German forbears could do it.

LOL! Reminds me of an old family friend who always brought her famous (infamous) German style pig's tails. Cheap and tender but gawd awful!

Tracy, I grew up hating spinach because my mom only served it from a can, all slimy and mushy.  It wasn't until I was in my 30s that I had a traditional spinach salad (with chopped egg and bacon) at someone's house and realized then that it was actually a leafy green vegetable. Now I usually have a bag of spinach leaves in the fridge.
