Joyce, my heart would've been pounding and my legs would've felt wobbly for an hour after that experience! Thank doG it turned out okay, but talk about making your blood pressure sky-rocket!
Cathy, there are risks with keratin treatments, due to the formaldehyde. Most of the risks are for the stylists who are exposed to the product on a regular basis, handling and breathing the chemicals, less so for the client in the chair for a couple hours every few months. Because of the risks, my stylist never offered Brazilian Blow-outs and similar popular services. But he found a new product line with far less formaldehyde in it, and they have one formula that has NONE, which is what he used on me.
Which leads me to your question, Tiffy --- because formaldehyde is the thing that makes the hair straight and silky, the formula he used on me is aimed at mainly reducing frizz, while retaining curl. When it's applied, the stylist still uses a flat iron to seal it in your hair, so I came home with stick-straight hair unlike anything I can get with my own flat iron. Now I have to leave it unwashed for 48 hours (ick). I'll report back about how it looks when I do my own styling later this weekend. My hair is very coarse, quite frizzy, and very wavy (not ringlet curls), so I'm hoping this will make it look smooth and wavy. I'll keep you posted!
