It seems like these things usually end with the shooter committing suicide or putting themselves in the position of getting killed by police.

I thought the same thing but this guy wanted to live. In fact I just saw a twitter feed saying he had a bullet proof vest, and some similar type of protection for his legs, neck and groin. I've read too much about the whole thing and just listened to the 911 tapes and I feel heartbroken for all affected by this. I can't imagine that hearing his motives will help one bit but I also can't help but wonder why he did this :(.

Jackie - I'm sorry that you have a not so fun weekend to look forward to. I hope it turns out better than you anticipate or goes by really fast.

Thanks for the link, Tina.  I was encouraged by the words, "healthy tonic" and herbs --- but I'm not so sure about "bitter" and "fiery kick."  However, I think it still might be tasty!

Wow - the guy was decked out with bullet proof stuff?  That shows plenty of premeditation and not just a random mental breakdown or crime of passion or something.  You're right, Cathy, about motives not really helping, yet you do have to wonder.

I meant to post that I was afraid for you, Karen, reading about your kayak ride in the storm.  I would've freaked out!  I'm glad you're all okay (and I guess the extra workout was a bonus)!

I am in a very clumsy phase at the moment and I am about tired of it!! I spilled coffee on my keyboard the other day and soda on my mouse and pad today. I've dropped umpteen other things this week too, totally have the dropsies. Glad that *so far* I've not broken anything <= how to jinx oneself

Aw Jackie I am so sorry about Coconut AND challenging family visits. Its a bit late or I could send you a few of B's Xanax Wink

The shooting is horrific. I don't have much else to say about it. I am always consumed with trying to understand the factors in these occurrences becoming more frequent.

I am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tired of the political ads - we are a 'swing state' so they've been going on since April already. During news hour it is non-stop. What really freaks me out is that people will hear these blurbs and make their decision.

Tracy - the storm was a bit scary and it certainly turned a decent workout into a very intense one. My hands are sore and tired today. It is many years ago when I was with a friend paddling on the Atlantic and a storm came out of nowhere that was terrifying. The ocean can be a chore to navigate but when a storm whips it into a frenzy going against the power of the ocean is a battle you will lose.

In big news...............DH finally came through with a belated gift (he is AWFUL about gifts, I'll leave it at that Angry) and he bought a kayak for me. Its very nice and versatile so I will be able to take it to a bunch of places. Well if I can figure out how to get it on and off my car safely. I am pretty psyched because you can buy a seasonal pass for the City Parks (includes the lake behind us) and then I can go out whenever I like. Especially since I want to use it with B this is very good news.

Bugsy was very helpful unpacking it

Karen, I meant to comment on your scary kayak lake trip.  I'm so glad you all got to shore safely.  How cool that your DH got you a kayak even if it was late, late, late.  lol  You and Bugsy are going to have so much fun exploring the lake.

How can anyone know what motivates someone like the CO shooter?  Surely there's an underlying mental illness of some sort but it's little comfort to those who lost loved ones.  So many tortured and sick people out there it seems, but thankfully few act out like this.  I can't imagine how terrifying it must have been in that theatre.

I'm counting the minutes till time to go home.  I've no idea of the plans with the family as yet. If I don't hear by a certain time we'll go out like we normally do on Friday and try and shake off the blues a little. :)

So my coworker and I ran out to get some Chinese take-away for lunch.  This was the fortune in my cookie:

"Saturdays are good days for taking care of chores."

I needed a fortune cookie to tell me that?!  Indifferent

Karen, I am excited about your kayak!! I have been toying with getting a 2nd kayak so I can take a dog with me. My current kayak is a touring boat. It is 15.5 ft long and narrow. No place for a dog at all. Please let me know hot the sit on top one works out with you and b. That is a sit on top right? (Hard to tell with it all wrapped up lol).

What a day. There was a lot of venting and lively discussion (arguing) going on in the office today. Mostly by me. I am opinionated normally but not usually argumentative. Not today though and I feel kind of bad for my team leader who got thr brunt of it. My coworker, who i have been friends with for years before i even started working there pretty much told me i was being a "bitchy coworker" ha. She was right. I will apologize on monday. I hope i didn't ruin his weekend.

Congrats on the new kayak, Karen!  I was telling students the other day about him swimming with you. (We were giving examples of heel position and how different circumstances may warrant other positions, etc.)  Scary trip for you, tho!  Jeezum!

I gotta say it here - I just placed an order from dog.com over the phone with "Jody" - and she was great!  Very nice and professional!  It's Friday afternoon and I just got done being "nice and professional" all freakin' day, so I know how hard it can be to muddle through yet another call.  But she was pleasant, professional, and fast.

I'm feeling badly for my friend whose band will perform tomorrow night, but none of her own friends are going.  (Most have other commitments)  I've been guilted into going, even though I'd rather not.Confused

Who else is joining at the Tiki Bar?

Julie this is the kayak http://www.perceptionsport.com/kayaks/PRS_Pescador_120_Angler

It is a Wilderness Tarpon 120 that has been rebadged so it's supposed to be an excellent boat. I am totally not sure if B will figure out being on it but we shall see. At least it is weight rated for both of us lol. It will be a load of fun trying though

Paige that's pretty cool that you mentioned us in that context, the wild child hasn't had much good press hehehehehe

I have a floating line that I had attached to his PFD but he stayed within 3-4 ft of the boat which was ideal to me. The line is 10 ft

OK it's movie time, we are going to re-watch The Dark Night so we can recall where the new one should be. It's not easy getting old :)

Oh I too, placed an order with dog.com yesterday and had a very good phone experience

Cathy, I don't think that people who do things like that have motives.  They're just completely mentally unhinged.  They also arrested some 28 year old fool in Sacramento in connection with setting the Placer Co. fire, which I think is still burning although about 80% contained.  Apparently he was using pyrotechnics. I guess that can mean anything that explodes, but given the time of year I'd bet he was setting off fireworks ... in a bone dry canyon. I think they should make him replant every tree that burned.

Julie, do you work on Monday? Isn't that the day you leave?

The Colorado shooting is awful. But I just have to say...

were a 3 MONTH old and a 6 year old doing in a theater, for a R-rated movie, at MIDNIGHT?!! People should be able to be arrested for stupidity. This is borderline abuse in my book.

No, i fly out tues. When do you leave? Now you have me worried!

I hear you about the babies at the movies....maybe the news has something wrong about that info. I can't imagine.
    • Gold Top Dog

Janice, I'm glad you posted that.  I was just discussing this with DH over dinner.  I'm not a parent, so I realize my perspective is completely without any knowledge or experience, but my thoughts are just what you said.  DH thinks it's no big deal that the children were there.  We started this mini-argument last night at an outdoor rock concert, where the people in front of us had an infant about a month old with no earplugs.  It was incredibly loud, and we had rain and sheet lightening for 30+ minutes (and they stayed until the final note was played).  I felt so bad for the poor baby, but DH thought I was over-reacting.

As for movies, if a child is awake during the movie, then the imagery is entirely inappropriate (even without understanding the movie, the visual impact would be there).  And if the child was asleep, then the sound level could damage their ears.  Nevermind all the practical implications like interfering with a normal sleep schedule (for the older child) being there at midnight, the cost of the extra tickets (assuming they charge for children), and the possiblity of the child not cooperating and disturbing the other patrons during the movie.

I don't understand parents who don't make a better choice:  get a babysitter, or if you can't find one or can't afford one, then make the mature sacrifice and skip the movie this time.  Again, I know my opinion isn't informed since I don't have kids, but that's what I think!

    --end of rant--

      Exactly what I was thinking!
