Karen - Bugsy's sloppy sit is how Ari usually sits, only with that one leg kicked out a bit more lol.  She can and does sit properly, but not usually.  No biggie for me, I just want her butt in the near vicinity of the floor lol.

This is how Max sits most of the time ... goofy and sort of sideways.  Once in a while he'll do a proper sit, but like Sharon I don't really care as long as his butt lands somewhere the floor when he hears "sit." Big Smile

Tootsies, butt isn't that far from the ground, so yes. Stick out tongue Except when she thinks something awesome is coming, then she hovers in a sit waiting to move quick!

Bean perches, and does it consistantly, so it's no points off in obedience. Some dogs' conformation really doesn't allow a butt on the floor sit. I'll be interested to see what Chaos does. Haven't taught him to sit, yet.

Just found out that German Shorthair Pointers are another breed that cannot sit with their butts on the ground.............further evidence he has that breed in his bloodline????

Big Smile  See I love this thread.  Need more pics for sitting therapy, lol!

Rocky never had to be taught to sit.  He automatically has done it since the day he arrived at foster approx 4-5 weeks old.  A proper sit never paid attention to whether his butt was on the ground.  Hot Shot....that's totally different.  He prefers to lay rather than sit, may go into sit then on down he goes.  When he does sit it think his butt is on the ground, cant tell cause of all the hair.  Doesnt often sit proper like Rocky usually a lazy kind of sit.   Shadow used to sit very properly, may have to check pics to see if he hovered too.

well I personally can't say but on the GSP forum a woman that shows/breeds/ trials said they like greyhounds cannot. She has four and she said the male spreads his legs out a bit wider to get his butt closer to the ground but it doesn't touch.

She agreed that on sloppy sits it can - and then stated she doesn't allow sloppy sits :) Since she competes in obedience I presume it is OK there.

Two others have said their two sit similar to B -

again I am just repeated what others have said

hmmm, I'm not sure about that being true for GSP's.  Look at some images of GSP's and you'll find plenty with their butts planted firmly on the ground.  The one's I've known were capable of sitting with butts touching the ground but I can't vouch for how well bred they were. :)  Perhaps the confirmation in some lines prevents it.  I still think it's mostly a "won't" issue with most dogs.

ROFL!  I know it will be a chore for you.  After watching many Labradors sitting, waiting for the action to start at Hunt Tests, I know that many people could say they aren't capable of sitting "properly".  Experienced handlers waited until they saw the dog sit back (even just a tiny bit) because they knew the hovering sit meant the dog was only an instant away from taking off. :)

Just my opinion, but I do believe the dog's state of mind is often what dictates the sit.  Excited dogs are usually leaning forward with their rear legs gathered for takeoff which accounts for their legs being closer together and not allowing the butt to reach the ground.  Relaxed dogs have their weight shifted toward the rear and yes, legs slightly more apart.  Dogs with spinal issues or other ortho problems may feel pain when sitting in a certain position.  Personally, I like to insist on a firm sit when I'm in serious training mode (rarely happens these days) but otherwise I don't care how they sit.

I think so...but it's hard to tell with all the hair. What do you think?

Princess does the same thing, it's kind of funny, actually. :)

Charlie says why sit when you can lay down.

When he does his signature beg pose he usually doesn't put his butt on the ground.  But, I make him if he's getting a treat or dinner.  Usually when he just sits, his butt hits.  Although like Tootsie, it isn't too far from the floor to begin with LOL
