Here is a picture of my GrandDog, Heidi.  She and Johnny are inseparable.  His sang his first song to her and talks to her all of the time.  She is really a gift.

Heidi is beautiful. My mom calls Jake her granddog I think it is so funny and I love it.  She was against us getting a dog but she is the biggest softy in the world when it comes to Jake now.  LOL   Heidi reminds me of Jakes bestest girlfriend our neighbors dog Tianna.  Its funny I will look out the door and there will be Tianna looking in the window.  Waiting to come in and visit with Jake and get a treat.[:D]   And before anyone asks, she is only offleash when they are in the yard and they know I dont mind her coming over in the yard. She also has been very well trained and has wonderful recall.

Karen Pryor's book "don't shoot the dog" was a life-altering experience for me.

My all time favorite is "The Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson.  For newbie owners, I like to suggest "Parenting Your Dog" the new one by Trish King.

Second Hand Dogs - How to Turn Yours Into a First Rate Pet by Carold Lea Benjamin is an excellent reference book for people adopting their first dog.

"How to Speak Dog" by Stanley Coren and "The Dog Bible" by Tracie Hotchner.

The first one is more on behavior. I really liked it because it gave me a lot of insight into dog communication, and it had illustrations and a quick canine language reference guide at the end. The second one is good for novice owners like myself -- very informative and covers an enormous amount of topics.
