I disagree about shelter dogs. I work at a shelter and weve got TONS of puppies, from 1 month to 6 mos weve got about 30. Maybe the specific one you looked at didnt at the time... We are totally full with dogs of all ages. Check petfinder.com and you WILL find a PUPPY in your area I guarantee you.
Actually, believe it or not, there ARE areas that really do not have puppies in shelters. It's pretty hard to believe, but it's definitely possible. I live in an area in the northeast US and I can remember the first time my family was looking for a dog... we called every single darn shelter in the area looking for puppies and NONE had any whatsoever. Finally we found one that imported puppies in from other areas of the world that were overloaded with homeless pups and were able to adopt one of those (Nikki). We went back to that same shelter to get Cairo, and just to give you an idea of the high demand of shelter puppies in my area, we called the shelter in the morning and they had just received a shipment of 36 puppies. We called again at 5:00 in the afternoon and there were 7 left. That's it. People line up at the door to get them, and that's no exaggeration. The puppies they do get in are from areas like West Virginia and Puerto Rico (the Save a Sato program). I think it's wonderful that this one shelter does this, and I think more in my area ought to because of the high demand...we could provide a lot of homes for some needy puppies [

In any case, unless you do happen to be in one of these rare puppy-less areas, I'd go with the petfinder.com route...there are so many puppies out there who need homes!!
