Saint Bernards and Collies

toklex- what a handsome face! I'm going to for sure see if I can get a smooth next time. That hook thing(don't know the name) to the collar is what we had to get for Sophie b/c she breaks anything smaller, like the leash connecters and we have a chain tie out like that and we end up buying an expensive one at Tractor Supply b/c the others snap. She's been through some collars and leashes too.

lol the you all are changing me from rough collies to smooth collies to rough st.s to smooth st.s
Mastiff- oh man poor Dudley! I wonder what happened to him. It's good that you made him happy, do you still have him? He is so handsome ..lol love the keg. My husband is always like let's get a keg, let's get a keg!
sairey when I had Avalanche-the white collie. I was shocked that everyone knew what he was!

PWCA, the only time I saw a double dilute, and knew it was a double dilute, was one time recently the collie rescue league offered one and had his picture on their website (He's no longer there). He was deaf and I think blind but the merle patch was on his head. That is why I wondered how you could tell a double dilute with merle markings from a regular white with merle markings. Clear as mud LOL?

I love my rough collies. For whatever reason I have never wanted a smooth. I know they are wonderful dogs.

No.  Sadly Dudley got mast cell cancer and died. [:(]  He and Kato were very close, so I'm sure he misses him as much as we do.

I ordered that keg online from some guy who makes them to order.  He only makes a few a month, so there's always a waiting list.  They are very nice and you have your choice of wood.  That keg is sitting on the shelf next to his box of ashes!

Sairey- I love both varieties, and if Mal wasn't a potential service dog, I think I would have held out for a rough. (But the smooth coat is much easier to keep in shape- plus, I don't know that I'm up to showing a rough, realistically- that's a LOT of coat to condition.) I hope my next one will be another rough- I miss my fluffy girl.

Pwca -- I don't show, so I don't have to take that into consideration. I do try to keep them brushed and have a professional groom every few months. Billie (10-year-old tri) used to be a show dog (She's my champion), so she's really excellent on the grooming table -- just used to it, I guess.

Colliewog --  First and foremost  [&:]  They are GORGEOUS.  You knew that, but there's no way anyone could say that enough.

While you can find 100s of pictures of rough coated collies online, the smooth variety is a lot harder to see.  I hope my request for profile pictures didn't seem strange-- I wanted to see the shape of muzzle and the slope down to nose, how deep or non-existant the roman nose was, and the shape of the head's crown.  I also wanted to see how they carry their ears, how deep their chest goes (above/below elbow) and how they held their rear legs and tail.  Some of these things are so darn hard to see when the dog has piles and piles of hair.

I have a rescue mutt that is either GSD/collie or collie/borzoi or borzoi/GSD and it just drives me bonkers not knowing.  Darn those mysteries anyway.  [;)]  You seem like one of the most knowledgable collie lovers here, so you were the perfect person to ask.  [:)]  About how tall are your males at the withers?  Are they barkers?

It wasn't a weird request, but you'll find most Collie people photograph their dogs 3/4 view.  I just got my win pics back from a few weeks ago. I'll scan and post - it's a side view with a profile to boot!  +(Just don't look at me!)

My males are typically 25.5 - 26 in.  My mom has one that went to 27 in but he is a rarity!  (He's very leggy, not heavy boned at all, so he carries it well and is still very agile).  They are talkers, but not nuisance barkers.  They alert bark, but can be called off easily.  I don't reprimand for barking, as I prefer to put a command with it and use it to scare spooky people off (as I did last night!).  A simple "Who's out there?" send them into guard/bark mode, but then "Enough" quiets them right down.  They do bark while playing, either with you or other dogs, so that can be a problem at 4:30 in the morning, but otherwise isn't a problem.  :)

Here's another pic of my Malcolm. He's 26 in and 72 lbs.

Wow Mastiff!  Dudley was gorgious!!  You did an awesome job with him.  I am very sorry to hear hes gone though, but Saints do have a shorter life span than most.  Either way, its nice to know he passed living a good life.

That is a chain we actually had to make for another dog we had long ago that was an escape artist, lol.  We did have a run set up for the dogs for when they wanted to be out for a while or when we didnt have time to be with them outside, but Budda, at around 6 months, started ripping the board off of our shed it was hooked to, so needless to say, that is nonexsistant now, lol.  We want to set up another one, since we cant afford a fence right now, hopefully we will get that done this spring.

In general, and over all, how trainable are they as a breed (in your experience?)  Are they given to being stubborn?  Are they chewers.
• Gold Top Dog
Kiche- the two collies were very bad chewers but very trainable. I taught Avalanche everything., and Duster would had done any tricks. My Saint Bernard(funny this is the other way around) she does not chew anything but the rawhide bones we give her,but she is hard to train. She is hyper like they are but she doesn't care for treats or a job well done praise.

From everything that you and Colliewog have said (27" as a rarity?  My mutt is 30.5" at the withers.  :(  ), Collie seems to be like the last thing my mutt is mixed with.  At least he never barks!  Someone above said that people always assume any sable coated dog is a collie, and mine is a red-sable, and I hear it all of the time.

In a way, I wish he WERE a bit more Collie.  Smart as the devil, but incredibly difficult to train.

Eclipse, why ARE those pictures so small?!  Those are beautiful animals, I really wish I could see more of them!  ....and have them.

Kiche, at that size, I'd be suspecting a borzoi mix, rare as they are! :P

Mal is 23.5" at 7 months and 57 pounds. It will be interesting to see how big he ends up. :P He already seems giant, although that's honestly a combination of klutzy teenager and me just not being used to such a big dog. :P Wings was 21.75" full grown!
