Saint Bernards and Collies

toklex-wow! what a handsome boy! I like his markings. What's his name? My Saint has a splash coat but has a full mask on her face and she is long haired. I would like a smooth haired one day but it may be hard for me to find one around here.
sairey-oh I have never heard of a hidden blue merle-sounds very pretty and interesting!
Sarah is soo pretty! She looks like a sho
w dog with her coat being so brushed up and shiney. How old are your collies? Have you ever heard of the color sable merle?

Malcolm is a grand Scottish name for a grand Scottish breed.  [;)]

I currently have 4 Collies -

Malcolm - sable/white Smooth male, 6yrs
Smidgen - sable/white Smooth female, 3 yrs
Dora - tricolor Smooth female, 9 mos
Figment - sable headed white Smooth female, 9 mos

This is a recent pic of Figment - my fairy princess

[:D]  I'm so glad this thread popped up, I have been waiting for a chance to ask you to post some pictures of your collies.  Specifically side views and profiles of their handsome faces and beautiful stances.  I've had so much trouble finding good, frank photos of collies online and I love your dogs.

Ask and you shall receive!

Dora (Figment's sister)

Body shot of Figment (from a few months ago).  I've still got to scan her recent win pic.

Momma Smidgen

With Dora hot on her tail (literally - had her tail in her mouth! lol)

Peek a Boo - it's a Collie in a Box!

Malcolm - after a recent obedience trial.  He's such a ham.  (Both of his ears went prick after the birth of these pups - I think the stress did it!)

I don't take many profile shots, as I love to get their beautiful expressions!  But here's a pic of Fig a few months ago ...

Figment, you are sooooooo pretty! [:)]

Figment is beautiful!

I think (in three or four years, when I've recovered from Mal), I want my next collie to be a CHW- preferably with blue merle. :P

Wow, talk about two different ends of the spectrum-both are beautiful dogs, but have very different habits and personality traits.  As a herding dog, collies are usually quite energetic, can be bossy to other pets and family members, are very intelligent.

St. Bernards have jowls, and a ton of drool.   They are not so very fast, and tend to conserve energy rather than expend it once they are full grown.  They are slower to learn-need more repetition.  Their ears droop over and you have to watch carefully for ear infections because between fur and flopped over they seem prone to the yeast type build ups-whereas collies ears prick up and exposure to air and light seems to minimize the yeast infection issue.

They do both have alot of coat-however there are short coated collie breeds

I am not sure why you would compare the two.  I don't see the connection unless it is just general knowlege

colliewog- I enjoyed looking at your photos. I never had a smooth coated one and after all those wonderful pictures, it'll be what I'll get next time.
suefiz- oh I wasn't comparing I was just wondering if there was anyone who had a Saint Bernard or Collie. I love both breeds and had/have one or more of the breed. They are completely different! But my Saint isn't like the others she would be right up there with the collies energy, but not on the slow learning [;)]

Eclipse: According to the breeder of two of my collies, another name for hidden is cryptic. Another way to say heavily tri-factored LOL.Sarah is 11 yo now, Billie is 10 yo, Tristan is 4 yo and Lucas (his partner in crime) is also 4 yo; Tristan is only 5 weeks older. Yes, I have heard of sable merles. They look like light-colored sables to me. I am trying to figure out the difference between a white collie with a merle head and an oh whatchamacallit, those collies that happen when two merles are bred together -- they're usually deaf and/or blind. Do you know?

sairey-I wish you had some pictures. I just knew I had a place where I seen a color chart before so I looked through the links and found this color chart website, it's very helpful and useful to learn about the terms ,I'm going to read it over myself. The mix between two merles is at the bottom and they call it White Merle--

You'll definately want to read the link Eclipse posted.  The info below is from that link and would be the quickest way to answer your question.

WHITE . These collies are the result of a cross between either two white parents or white factored parents. Color is carried on a recessive gene (w) and is inherited INDEPENDENTLY of sable, tri or blue merle and may occur in combination with ANY of them. A blue headed white is just as sound and normal a Collie as the tri or sable headed white. These are not to be confused with the white merle whose "white" color results from the double dominant dilution merle gene, whereas the white color of a blue headed white results from the recessive gene (ww) and its blue color from the normal interaction of the merle gene with tricolor.

Actually, both St Bernards and Collies have a smooth variety. [;)]
