Is this dog skinny?

That dog is unbelievable skinny, its a pit bull not an italian greyhound! Pits are supposed to have muscle and be much more stocky and 'fat' than that!

uh, They should be more stocky? Sorry, I dont think so..Just wondering, what do you think a pit bull is supposed to look like?
    • Gold Top Dog
I think he could use a little more fat and A LOT more muscle. He looks like he is starving. Pits wern't supposed to look like that and I'm suprised the standard lets him be that thin and compete in conformation.

I find it weird that people think it's ok to have a dog be in that condition to satisfy some artificial show standard.

Ugh. I agree. That does has absolutely NO fat on his body. Dogs, like people, NEED some fat. I don't care if they're muscular, they still need some fat. That dog doesn't even look that muscular to me. You can just see the muscles ridiculously well because there's nothing else there.

I agree.  It's not a remotely attractive looking dog to me.  I can't see how it places looking like that.

practically every dog I've ever seen in an AKC conformation show was grossly overweight. Some people who do both conformation and sporting events "feed them up" for half the year to show in the ring, then work them back down to a sporting weight. That can't be healthy either. A little too skinny is much healthier than too fat. But that dog in the original pic looks like they did something unpleasant to it to get the muscles to be so visible, perhaps to compensate for it not actually having much muscle? well-exercised weight pulling pits are much more heavily muscled.

Yuck. I find it kind of confusing that people would say that that's an example of an "amazing" dog in great condition. Whoever said that it looks like a thoroughbred about to go on the track has apparently never seen a thoroughbred. Ever! Thoroughbreds' ribs show SLIGHTLY and they do have fat. They are thickly muscled and trim, but their spines are not sticking out like a dimetrodon's fan. I think a good guide to use to find out if an animal is too skinny is to look at the head. Does it look gigantic? Then the animal is probably too skinny. Ha. This dog's head looks like a joke it's so big on that tiny, bony little body. He could swallow his own body. Some people might think that this look is attractive, but it certainly can't be healthy and should not be what people think of as being "peak condition" for any animal. Pit or not.

you need to understand that this dog does not look like this year round..here is a better pic of the same dog

Dont bother. People dotn take the time out to read everyone's replies and the whole story. Otherwise they wouldnt still be commenting on it, they see the pic, form a opinion and beleive their opinion to be the truth. Not one person compared this dog to a runner before a marathon, a greyhound conditioned for a race or a horse.

I think people go completely over board with making sure a dog is thin when the ribs are showing.  You shouldn't be able to see ribs on a lot of breeds.  Frankly, I think a lot of dogs are too thin including the dog in the picture.  And, I question what kind of person this guy is with fighting marks on the dog and the typical huge chains and collars that get put on dogs that fight.  It's pathetic.

Sheparo--People DID compare him to all the things you mentioned, did you read all the posts?

this dog isnt even wearing a "huge chain." Infact i have not seen one picture of any of this guys dogs wearing any huge chain...and just because a dog wears a wide collar or is chained dosent mean its a fighting dog [sm=rolleyes.gif]..
    • Gold Top Dog
If you haven't seen any of this guys dogs wearing chains then you haven't looked at the link to his site that "sooner" posted on page two of this thread.  It's post #37.  Go look.

Oh, and here's another page too---

The original pic on this thread is grotesque looking. What kind of standard requires dogs to look that way?? And why is it okay for the dog to be in that condition for even part of the year?

Thanks for the link Lori. Most of the dogs pictured on the pedigree are shown with a huge chain on.... gee I wonder if possibly the dogs live on that chain.[8|] And the guy seems so responsible; the bitch is for sale because they need money for moving. [:-]

This dog is even more underdone than usual ADBA dogs, but not so much so. The ADBA do prefer to see dogs conditioned to the fullest, and I'll say this dog is as close as they come!

Looking up this dog, his name is Macho Buck and he was a fighting dog, unfortunately. He died in 2008.

I know this is an old thread but since it has been brought up, I'll just throw my 2 cents in there anyways.

No I dont think the dog is skinny. Seriously people, when a dog is pulling hard and straining against the lead, ANY dog can look ripped if you're good at taking pictures. The REAL APBT was an athletic dog, not fat hippos that seem to be what the "pit bull" has become today. You wouldnt say the dog looked skinny if it was a sighthound, because thats how the breed looks. Obviously it is not healthy for them to be fully conditioned all year round, but for a lot of APBTs it genetic, not just conditioning.. IMO
