    Pointers on Pointers. :P

No, not doggy porn.  I'd like some tips and pointers on the Pointer breed.  The dog I have just adopted is a Pointer mix, according the the shelter.  I would like to know if there are any tips and tricks to working with this particular breed to bring out the best in her.  Are there any certain things I may find more difficult with this breed?

    Here's a pic. :)

The dog looks great and in good condition, but I am not betting that there is any pointer there-looks to me like a walker coonhound.  I own one.  The dog has a very muscular chest and forelegs, and yet the stomach area looks to be really tucked up.  How long have you had her???????  They are extremely loving animals-especially with children-usually pretty compatible with other dogs.   They can run like the wind.  Have you actually ever seen the dog point?   Have you heard the dog bark or bay????   Anybody else out there think that this is a hound mix rather than a pointer mix.

OH MY GOODNESS!!! Her face is so similar to Dodger's I nearly fainted (American Foxhound)![:)]

It's possible that she is a pointer mix but she looks more sotcky to me - possible harrier  or lab mix?  My friend adopted a beagle/collie cross that has a similar build and coat length, only with different markings.  Actually checking her height, she's bigger than she looks - how much does she weigh?

She looks gorgeous and sounds like a wonderful girl!

Dodger's ears and muzzle are longer and he's much leggier and has a major tuck - but they have the same expression!  Dodger's ear look really short in this picture too - this was at 10 months:

I'm not sure how much Pointer is in her either, but it's very possible she's a mix. I have a Pointer and your dog's face  (except the colors) remind me of my dog's. Though she looks a lot like jetty's dog too.

As for Pointers.... well, based on what I've learned from mine, is that they never run out of energy! I hope you like walking or running because otherwise your dog may become restless. They're not really a breed you can leave in the house all day. I bring mine to the doggie daycare where I work to help wear her out.

I've heard that Pointers have very, very low levels of aggression compared to other dogs. I know this is true for mine, I can't imagine her even growling at someone. She loves everyone, people and dogs alike, and especially kids (which is ironic because she was abused by kids before I got her.)

Not sure if it's a breed trait but mine's a bit shy. Not around people, but new places and things. She gets nervous when I take her to unfamiliar places... but I think this is because she was not socialized when she was young.

As for training, I've heard both that Pointers do very well with training and that they do poorly... and the reasoning is the same: they're hunting dogs. Some say they'll do well because they are naturally loyal and obedient and others say they do poorly because what they do--pointing and tracking--is mostly instinct and not taught. I'm in an obedience class with my dog right now and she is about average compared to the others.

Have you seen your dog point? That's probably how you'll know if she's really a Pointer or not. Mine didn't point for a long time, then one night she saw a rabbit and took on a perfect point stance. She's done it about a dozen times since then.

Regardless of breed, your dog is really pretty [:)] I'd love to see more pics!

Hi we have a pointer orange and white he is 5months old now, very very lively and never runs out of energy..............your dog is gorgeous but i think the only likeness to a pointer is his ears just think of a chamois leather soft and floppy and wafer thin.
A pointer is generally very slim and just has enough muscle and fat thats covers his ribcage, the ribs should just be felt by rubbing down his body and they also have  a very square muzzle with a bone at the top of his head called "occiput bone".
We have had lots and lots of fun with "jazzie", at the moment we are taking him to training classes he has been doing very well, can sit, stay, lie, finish and is walking very well on the lead, his retrieving is a little wayward to say the least but we are very pleased with his progress.
The pointer is a very satisfiying breed if you have the time and energy to give him then everything else is a bonus!!!!
I shall try and upload some pics of him, havent put any on before so here goes ...........
    Best wishes claire and jazzie

with a bone at the top of his head called "occiput bone".

So that's what that is! I've always wondered, since I haven't really noticed it in other dogs, at least not as much. It's how she got one of her nicknames: Knothead [:D]

Bloodhounds also have a very pronounced occipital protuberance and we've always referred to Conrad's as his "ushnisha" (um, when we're not referring to him as "pinhead"). In traditional representations of the Buddha, he is often shown as having a bump on his head called the "ushnisha" which symbolizes wisdom and openness. Just a little occipital trivia for you!

It's called a "thinking bump."  It's where the brain is located.  j/k.  These dogs are(in my opinion at least) actually very intelligent, although they'd rather chase the rabbit than listen to their handler.  She's so cute!  Good luck with your little hound!

My Gracie is a pointer.  Question is, "does your dog point?" [;)]

I agree that your dog looks more "hound" than bird dog.   Although ,pointers have a lot of hound (greyhound, bloodhound and fox hound) in their lineage, and their behavior, at times, shows it. They not only are ":birdy" like setters, but they will go after a rabbit or squirrel.   ;Pointers have a chisled head with a pronounced "stop" between the eyes and muzzle.  They also have more of a square muzzle that can turn up a bit (evidence of the bit of bull terrier in them, as well). My Gracie has a pretty deep chest with a narrow waiste and really strong thighs and loins.   They are a bit more independant outside than other gun dogs.  They've been bred to range far (up to three miles) so don't trust him off leash until you get your recall down.

Grace is the kindest soul.  We call her St. Grace of Three Oaks (lol).  She is a really stable and gentle creature, but outside can outrun my setter hands down.

Oh, my! Thanks for all the replies!  I still don't know what breed to say she is.  She does have that bone on the top of her head, but you only REALLY notice it when she's in a sitting position.

As far as training her...some of what a few of you have said sounds very much like her.  She is very hard to get to focus on ME when we are outside, because he nose is always to the ground, and she wants to follow the scents.  She walks well on the leash if she doesn't have a scent in her nose.  I will get more pictures up as soon as I get a chance to upload them. :)

Not that I care if she's one type of dog or another, I'd just really like to find out exactly what she is, for own curiosity, and so I can research her breed.

And she does have a fair amount of energy...but it's alright, because it's a GREAT movitivation to excersize MYSELF! hehe.  I have her out a lot, and I have a huge, open apartment that there is room enough to play fetch (she already knew how...he had to have had some training in her past), which burns quite a bit of energy.

Anyway, thanks for all of your thoughts! And you all have BEAUTIFUL dogs!  Maya looks a LOT like some of them, and quite a bit like all of them.
