Italian greyhound owners: I live in Madison, Wisconsin, and we have an Italian Greyhound Rescue here. Am considering adopting an Italian greyhound. I've done some research and have heard they are extremely difficult to housebreak and even if housebroken, will prefer to go inside when it's cold out. Is this true? I currently have a cocker spaniel who hates the cold too so I put a sweater or jacket on him and he's fine with going out. I know greyhounds aren't cold-weather dogs at all but I would think sweaters, clothes, booties would help? We also have a cocker spaniel rescue in the area so am torn between the two breeds.

You are VERY right on the house breaking! My girl has been training for 7 months! She is 13 months old! I got her when she was 6 months old.  She is such a wonderful lap dog, loving and motherly. Also, when you take them out to potty, if you don't put them on a leash...they take off...they are runners. We are trying to crate train her now. Have a dacshund also and she will go outside. If they are left loose in house both will go in house. VERY touchy situation!

hello, I've just recently joined and I've got a greyhound too. They really are wonderful, beautiful dogs and so easy to walk. My basenji drags me around as though I was an old potato sack, but my grey, Zephyr, is completely well behaved. My grey is white with a few creamy red spots, I was going to call her 'Red Cap' on account of this but decided with Zephyr. She is a great soldier of a dog and beats Sammi up if he even so much as looks at her food. Well done I say, Sam can really be obnoxious. The German word for greyhound is "Wind Hund", pronounced Vind Hoond (oo as in foot) which means wind dog. what a perfect name for a gentle, fast creature. When I get home at night Zephyr spins around and around on the spot, it's amazing to see such a big white whirlwind of a dog spin around in such tight little circles. She also makes these little frustrated noises in her throat as though she can't get all her emotion out at once, she, like all dogs is completely beautiful.

Anna-  Zephyr sounds like a love…[:D]
It also sounds like she is a “white with red fawn” maybe??  Does she look like the below pic of my Prudence??

Did she race at all?  If she did have you looked her up on the racing database??  I really like seeing their history and some times it can answer some of the “unanswered” questions you have about their personality. Here are the links to JJ and Prudence#%92s and you can look up your baby on there too either by ear tattoo or racing name.   If you have questions about how to look her up... let me know!

Zephyr looks a bit like prudence, but Prudence is probably a bit prettier. Prudence has more red on her face, Zeppi's red patches are more on her head and ears. As you say, they are a bit more like a reddish fawn. I don't seem to have a photo of her in this computer I'll try to post one soon. By the way, here's something I'd really like to know, for some reason Zeppi always has a dirty snout, it's hard to clean it off and I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about how to keep a greyhound's snout clean. Zephyr isn't a 'ladylike' dog, she loves to dig and sit in the dirt , loves shouting at dogs going past HER house and shouts at the cats if they wake her up accidently. If she feels like no'one really understands that she needs the couch in peace and quiet 24/7 she grumps off  to my bed, and grumps back again if the couch is clear. She knows every morning she has to go outside and sometimes she won't go until I have to pick her up and carry her to the door.

Anna- Zephyr sounds like a total character!!!What a great personality!

JJ doesn't ever clean his muzzle after he eats aso he get sfoof "crusties" built up.  I use a tearless saop free shampoo on his face once a week to try to get it a little cleaner.

Pleas post piccies when you have them!  Do you know her info to look her up on the racing database?

hello and thankyou for the tip on tearless shampoo. I'll try that. it'll take some scrubbing and I'll try to do that as gently as possible. Poor Zeppi! As for her racing career as I'm in Australia I'm not sure if the system would be the same. However, I recently had Zep registered in my name as I might show her (only for fun, I don't think she'd win anything she's quite a small greyhound, many people ask me if she's a whippet and the fist thing I said when I saw her was "she looks like a whippet", poor Zeppi) anyway, along with the registration paper I recieved her weight card which stated Zeppi was disqualified once for not running. Her racing career started 9.9.03 -2.12.04. I'd be interested to find out more details and have tried the Greyhound Racing Authority website but couldn't find any links. I have her brand number. For a few reasons I think she was a bit roughly treated she was wary of being patted and would howl if she was touched amongst a few other things. I've had difficulty uploading pics. every time I try to I get an error message saying pdf (or something like that) is not supported. I'll keep trying. It's a pity cos I've got some really cute picks of her and my other pup Sam (the most handsome dog in the world , he is the Brad Pitt of dogs(!))

hahahaha! Do you mean my JJ (Jimmy James)? I have to laugh because my Dh is named Jim and I got confused at first thinking "I don't remember posting pictures of Jim on i-dog!!!"[:D]

Ok, so I have actually heard (and seen a few) that greys in Australia are smaller than the racers in America. Also, if you have Zeppi's ear tattoo number I can look her up for you and see if I find anything.  what was her full racing name??
    • Gold Top Dog
Nope but I would like to own a retired racer greyhound someday. They are awesome dogs!
